THE FULL COLD MOON
Truer words were never spoken. Turning my thermostat up and up each day is a daily reminder. My blessing is an electric blanket.
The other name for this month is the Full Long Nights Moon. That also cannot be disputed. Wow! Sixteen hours of dark and eight hours of light. However, the eight hours of light are only on days that the sun shines. That has not happened very often the past few weeks. Oh well, only 3 more weeks and the days start to get longer.
The full moon this month will be on Thursday the 12th. Did you see the full moon last month? It was so beautiful but I only saw it the night it was full because of overcast skies. I hope that this month will be clear because it should be a huge silver ball. Happy moon watching.
I’m writing this on Saturday, November 30th so I can get an early start on the View. I checked outdoors before I retired for the night and saw the Finger Nail Moon. It is about 1/8 the size of the Full Moon. We always watched for it about 2 weeks ahead of the full moon. It is so interesting to see it get larger and larger.
TRAVEL WEEK
I hope that you all are back in your homes safely. If any of you have some travel, or not travel, stories, please give me a call.
I know that many of you were not able to travel over the river and through the woods on Thanksgiving Day. Our family was minus four members because of roads that were not yet cleared or actually closed to traffic. Never the less, we had a very “family” time together. There was a lot of conversation about how things used to be. The most important “THING” discussed was the cell phone. How interesting it would have been if we had experienced some of our adventurers if we had had cell phones. I have a dozen stories and I am sure that you have too. Oh well, it is over for this year and we now look forward to Christmas and the New Year. May all your travel plans be perfect and safe.
CHOUTEAU COUNTY COUNTRY CHRISTMAS
For you readers new to the community we have a great weekend coming up on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. It will be a full day and something for everyone.
Kiddos can shop at their very own Santa’s North Pole Outlet Mall. You can purchase, for small amounts, a gift for everyone on your gift giving list. (That also includes your brothers and sisters.)
For other shoppers check your schedules and fit it to fill your entire day. You have bus transportation and Santa will be all over town. I can hardly wait and I’ll be to as many places that I can. Have fun shopping.
To our neighboring towns, you have a variety of choices. Big Sandy, Virgelle, Loma, Shonkin, and Geraldine are all in the ready. Choose all those that you can get to. Support our local artists and businesses. They service you all year long. Christmas is a wonderful time to show your appreciation.
REMINDERS
HIGH SCHOOL CHRISTMAS CONCERT
The date is the 16th and I am asking that the Elementary School auditorium be filled to capacity. We have a new music teacher, Andrew, and since the last concert was not well attended, the community has to make it up to him. This also includes those students who are in the band. They spend many hours practicing and deserve to have a full house audience. I’ll be there and I know you will be there too.
BINGO
The next game on Monday, December 16th at the usual place and time.
TUESDAY NIGHT DINNER
The monthly Tuesday night dinner will be on the 17th. Be sure to call in your reservations at 622-3601. I know that it will be an extra special dinner for the Christmas holidays. This takes place at the Golden Age Senior Center of course.
COOKIE WALK
On Wednesday the 11th from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. there will be a “Cookie Walk” at the Golden Age Senior Center. This event is one of my favorite things to do. The women are all wonderful bakers and the variety is so mouthwatering and you can purchase as many as you would like. They are sold by the number, and it has always helped me to have on hand cookies and hot chocolate in case someone drops in. I did purchase Swiss Miss Chocolate and marshmallows just in case because every Hallmark movie has hot chocolate. They always have a mug in their hands and it is served frequently at tree lightings and family gatherings.
All my family and friends are laughing as they read this article because they know I am addicted to Hallmark movies. My daughter, Jennifer, bought me a t-shirt that says, “All I want is to watch Hallmark Christmas movies all day long. The problem with that is that I do not watch TV during the day. Honest! However, come evening I satisfy my addiction by watching two movies. It helps with those Full Moon Long Nights.
The comforting part of all of that is that I have several friends who are also addicted. I have people to discuss the movies with. Thank you for being my friends.
CINNAMIN ROLLS
The breakfast luncheon with freshly baked cinnamon rolls will be on Friday December 27th at noon at the Golden Age Center. There was a scheduling problem last month that changed the rolls from the last Friday to the 3rd. It should not happen again that the date is changed. I missed it for the first time in a very long time because of the change. I do not know how the Senior Center expects me to act normally when I do not get my cinnamon rolls. They did promise it will not happen again.
CHRISTMAS CONCERT
You do not want to miss the Chouteau County Performing Arts Christmas Concert on December 15th. It always gets me in a great Christmas spirit. Music does that. All the hymns bring back the true meaning of Christmas. I’ll be there because I know that Santa will be showing up with his wonderful poem. I wonder what it will be about this year. I’ll be there to enjoy my favorite cowboy Wylie Gustafson.
BE KIND ESPECIALLY AT THIS TIME OF YEAR TO MAKE SOMEONE HAPPY.
HAVE YOU DONE YOUR GOOD DEED FOR THE DAY?

ALSO, GUIDE THOSE WHO HAVE LOST MEMBERS FROM MASS MURDERS. I cannot imagine what all of these people must go through. Imagine, saying so-long to someone in the morning and they do not come home from school or their job. Unimaginable!

VETERANS DAY
It is now shortly after 9:00 a.m. on Monday 11/11. It is very cold, the temperature at 2 above zero. However, the sun is shining brightly that makes it look warmer than it is.
I am ready to be picked up at 10:45 a.m. to attend the ceremony at the Veterans Park. What is called the “Veterans Cross” is being dedicated in the park this morning.
I am writing about this because some of our readers on the internet did not see the article in the River Press. They have told me that the View keeps them in touch with the old home town. I wish you were here to celebrate with us although the cold will keep some people at home.
I’ll get back to you when I return this afternoon. The VFW has invited those of us who attend to have lunch at the Club House.
It is now 12:30 p.m. and I just returned to the apartment after having a very moving time at the Veterans Park. Yes, it was cold but I was not cold at all. I was so engrossed with the ceremony of the Veterans Cross dedication and laying of the bricks.
It began with the school choir singing the National Anthem. There was a very good crowd because of the many youngsters who attended besides the choir. The dedication took place, the 21-gun salute, singing of Shenandoah (my favorite song) by the Choir, and Commandant Wood asked that the bricks be placed. Those who ordered bricks early found their brick and placed it on the walkway. It was done with a very proud feeling for those Vets who served but are no longer with us as well as for those that are with us now. God bless America and all of you too. We would not be free if it were not for you.
We then proceeded to the Club House where the VFW provided us with Beef Barley soup, chili, and corn bread. It was a perfect luncheon after being out in the cold. Thank you to the VFW. You are such an important part of the community as is the American Legion.
Keep the Veterans in your daily thoughts. They need all the support that you can give them. With losing 22 Vets a day to self-destruction, it is something that it is difficult to understand for those of us who are untrained. Hopefully it will be resolved quickly.
TUESDAY NIGHT DINNER
We are off again on Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. to the Golden Age Senior Center for a free dinner for Vets. What a wonderful idea and I, for many, say thank you to the seniors. Most of them are of the Greatest Generation and know the horrors of war. Keep them in your thoughts also as they slowly disappear.
ENOUGH ALREADY
By the time you get this issue of the River Press November will be almost half over. Winter should make its appearance a little over a month from now when the days begin to lengthen.
Meanwhile……we have been tolerating cold rain that turns into ice, and snow. The calendar relates to six weeks of winter already. Woe is me!
I know that I keep promising that I will not discuss the weather again BUT what else is there to talk about. I could talk about how early stores are pushing the Christmas season. But that is not a favorite subject. (Where do early shopper parents hide presents for two months? Yes, it would be that long as Christmas sales started before Halloween.
I asked the manager of a store, several years ago, why they began Christmas shopping in October. His reply was that they had to order early in the year and when it was delivered there wasn’t any place to store it. So……they put it out. (What do you think about that reasoning?)
I do not indulge in social media and I am wondering what is going on there. Are there complaints about this subject? Call me if you have any of that kind of information. (I’m in the book.)
THANKSGIVING
I’m on to a more pleasant subject. The holiday is late in the month this year. That leaves three weeks until Christmas. Hopefully it will fly by.
We have so much to be thankful for. Fort Benton is such a blessing for all of us. We haven’t had a flood for many years, no horrendous fire, or losing electricity for days at a time. We have dedicated volunteers who arrange events to keep us out and about. There is always something going at be it at the Library, the Ag Center, and other gathering places.
I am mentioning this because I saw a 100- year old woman on Backroads of Montana a couple of weeks ago. She was such an inspiration because she enjoyed every minute of every day. In her late 90’s she took up “POOL.” She said she did not want to sit around twiddling her thumbs. GO 100-YEAR OLD WOMAN.
Even though our weather isn’t perfect, I know that there is no other place you would rather be. Think about it!

Awesome! What an exciting season for all of your fans including me. It has been a long time and thanks to the coaches who are doing such a fabulous job with the Youngsters who give so much time for practice. GO LONGHORNS!

WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA
Coming up in December but purchase your wreath as soon as possible. Call Nancy LaChapelle to order. There isn’t a better way to remember your loved one. You get the wreath placed at the cemetery if you cannot do it. I know that personally, would not be able to shop for a wreath and take it to the cemetery. I want to remember my loved one at Christmas and how convenient for Wreaths Across America to do it for me. JUST DO IT!

It is coming up on December 6th, 7th, and 8th. It is not too early to be making your list and checking it twice. I love this event for the entertainment, the Taco Soup and Sandwiches to take a break with. Besides shopping until you are dropping. See you there!

Next Monday night is Bingo night at the Club House by the VFW. I never thought that I would ever be playing Bingo but I love it and the night out. It is a barrel of laughs and wonderful to see old and new friends. See you there too!

I wonder how long it will be before I remember to write 2019. It has always been a problem with me. Perhaps it will be different this year because I rarely write checks any more. Do we share this problem or if you solved it, please let me know?
ASSISTED LIVING
Fort Benton did not wait a long time for the Assisted Living facility to be built. When the announcement was made that it would be ready in December, a few shook their heads and said that it could not be possible. Well, it did take a month longer but on January 15th, which is next week, it will be open.
Another date to put on your calendar is Sunday, February 3rd from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. There will be an open house. It is open for all to see and meet those who will be taking care of those assisted living folks.
Another interesting tidbit comes from a discussion with Lindsey McWilliams a couple of days ago. The first plans for the facility were to hire a manager. Since then Lindsey has decided to handle it herself and has moved to Fort Benton. She purchased a home on the 800 block of Washington. Please show her a neighborly Welcome to Fort Benton”.
NEW COMERS
It really pleases me when people move to Fort Benton. When I went to welcome a new neighbor, I met the father-in-law who was visiting the new couple. He told me that he and his wife were moving to Fort Benton this coming summer from another state. He walked every day all around town. He knew exactly where I lived by my description of streets and structures. I am looking forward to seeing them again.
BINGO
Every Thursday afternoon at the Golden Age Senior Center there is a Bingo game going on. The few of us that participate and those who run it would like it very much if more people would join us. If you would like a few hours off quiet time and just concentrating on those numbers that are called…that is the place to be.
I never thought that I would ever play Bingo but there I am most weeks and enjoy it very much. When I am concentrating on the game, I do not think about anything else going on. I would like you to try it and perhaps you will become as addicted as I did. It also helps to get your thoughts off these long winter days.
I would also like to tell you that they have large cards that are easier to see. It helps a lot as I can play 3 cards easily (it is only $1.00 a card). I love to watch those players who have six cards in front of them. I have to confess that I do not play to win. I just enjoy the company of others who like to play Bingo.
There is also a cute goings on that gets you a prize if you participate. Wear something “PURPLE” on the Thursday the17th. We have already gone through orange and red clothing. It is a monthly event on Bingo day.

LET’S TALK BASKETBALL
We Basketball Fans have a lot to talk about these days. There were 2 nights of games last week and they were thrillers. Even though the Varsity Girls lost to Box Elder, (we love you anyway,) they are 7 and 1. The Longhorn boys are 8 and 0, and as well as the Lady Longhorns, are looking sooooooooooooooo good. We would love to win State but for sure the Longhorns will be there playing their little hearts out.
Thank you to the teams for giving us very exciting weekends. We Fans wouldn’t have it any other way…win or lose. You keep us very happy no matter what.
Just want to mention the Fort Benton High School Band. You are the greatest and I hope that you can hear me clapping even though I am in the opposite corner. I do not have any trouble hearing you. I even have to take my hearing aids out. GO BAND!

FULL MOON
The full moon was due on Wednesday, September 6th but was not visible because of the overcast sky. However, I did see it last night about 9:00 p.m. on the way home from Great Falls. Now if it was the harvest moon or just orange because of the smoke from the fires is a puzzle. I was not able to find on the weather channel this morning if it was a September Harvest Moon. Whatever the case, it was gorgeous and it was the end of a great day.
CHARLIE RUSSELL
I was fortunate enough to attend the premier showing of the PBS film of his life. It was a great event by PBS broadcasting and the work they did to produce this informative show was exceptional.
I knew very little about the life of Charlie Russell and I now know everything you would want to know about him. His artistic ability far exceeded those of any of his time (or any time) and he will always be known as the best Cowboy Artist of the West. His fame extends all over the world and this area is proud that Charlie chose to live in Great Falls for most of his life.
Many of Charlie’s paintings were shown that I have never seen. You can look forward to October when this production will be seen on PBS.
SMOKE AND MORE SMOKE
Yesterday, Saturday, and today the smoke is the strongest it has been so far in Fort Benton. I just went out for a moment this morning to water plants on my deck and my eyes are still burning. I feel so sorry for all those who have asthma or breathing problems.
In spite of the smoke I will ride along the Levee Walking Trail from the Bluffs to the Golden Age Senior Center. This week the geese and ducks cover the water by the Bluffs Island and it is good to hear them once again. (By the way, does anyone know the name of that island?) I also saw the geese take off one day to go out to feed. That was a beautiful sight.

Yes, Friday is Pie Day and I would really enjoy seeing you there. UNFORTUNATELY IT IS THE LAST PIE DAY. Yes, it is true and I just learned about it today when I had dinner at the Center. I picked up a menu for September several days ago but did not read the back page. It was announced there that because of the lack of bakers Pie Day would be discontinued. How bad news is that and it is the saddest news I have ever written about events that are going on?
I thought that it was a tradition in Fort Benton. Randy and I thought about asking the Mayor and Council to make it an ordinance that everyone had to go to Pie Day. This is my joke of the week but it is now not very funny. What we should have done was recruited more pie bakers and pay them big bucks for their service. This decision was not made because lack of participants. It was just a lack of pie bakers and I can understand that. I have often written about how the members of the Senior Center managed to bake pies every month. I feel so guilty because I never baked for this fund raising project. I just enjoyed the fruits of those gracious women’s labor.
So goodbye to Pie Day and the biggest thank you in the world to those pie bakers. You brought many happy pie eaters pleasure once a month for many years. I’ll remember you as long as I live.
TUESDAY NIGHT DINNER
The third Tuesday of each month from now until next May, the Tuesday night dinners begin. If you have never been to one of these affairs now is the time to start.
Chef Betty and her assistant Brenda put on a special treat dinner. Tables are set and special decorations are coordinated with the theme of the month.
There is a limit of 48 diners and you have to R.S.V.P. for a reservation.
Call 622-3601 and someone will put your name or names on the list. (If you find that you cannot attend and you have signed up, please call and cancel.) You will enjoy a great dinner for just $5.00.
BINGO
Games where scheduled to start at the Golden Age Senior Center on Thursday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. Last Thursday I showed up at the appointed time but we were not able to play as there were only 5 of Bingo junkies. That included the caller and the person who doles out the prizes.
So all of you who frequented the games at the Center previously, please show up on Thursday. Take the afternoon off and come for the games and the social hours.
The games at the VFW do not start until late October. Those of you who are addicted to playing can get your fix on Thursdays. It is about the only fund raiser the Center now has. The word is “support, support and more support.” See you there!

There will be a fund raiser at the Murphy Neal building Saturday, September 16th from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Proceeds go to the Messages from Afghanistan school building. Call Nancy at 868-6210 for tickets or more information.
ABOUT SLEEP
This information was sent to me by a friend and I thought I would share. By the time you are 80 years old you will have slept for 2223,600 hours. That is the equivalent of 26.67 years. (Does that make me 26 years younger?) I do not know what the figures are for those of you who do not sleep well.

RATTLESNAKE REPORT
Pam Lambott went out to her front lawn water faucet last Wednesday and saw a rattler curled up near the faucet. She recruited several helpful neighbors and the snake was dispatched with a shovel. (Pam lives on Front Street. I reported that a while back my neighbors, the Balls, ran over a rattler in the alley. We live at the other end of town or what my son Randy calls “Out in the country.”
I called Police Chief John Turner for a report on snake sightings since then but since he was “on the road” he did not know the exact number. He did know that there were several more since the last time I checked. He also said that he just saw a rattler 5 minutes before that had been run over on St. Charles.
So watch your step and if you see one, call 911.

FULL MOON
The full moon was due on Wednesday, September 6th but was not visible because of the overcast sky. However, I did see it last night about 9:00 p.m. on the way home from Great Falls. Now if it was the harvest moon or just orange because of the smoke from the fires is a puzzle. I was not able to find on the weather channel this morning if it was a September Harvest Moon. Whatever the case, it was gorgeous and it was the end of a great day.
CHARLIE RUSSELL
I was fortunate enough to attend the premier showing of the PBS film of his life. It was a great event by PBS broadcasting and the work they did to produce this informative show was exceptional.
I knew very little about the life of Charlie Russell and I now know everything you would want to know about him. His artistic ability far exceeded those of any of his time (or any time) and he will always be known as the best Cowboy Artist of the West. His fame extends all over the world and this area is proud that Charlie chose to live in Great Falls for most of his life.
Many of Charlie’s paintings were shown that I have never seen. You can look forward to October when this production will be seen on PBS.
SMOKE AND MORE SMOKE
Yesterday, Saturday, and today the smoke is the strongest it has been so far in Fort Benton. I just went out for a moment this morning to water plants on my deck and my eyes are still burning. I feel so sorry for all those who have asthma or breathing problems.
In spite of the smoke I will ride along the Levee Walking Trail from the Bluffs to the Golden Age Senior Center. This week the geese and ducks cover the water by the Bluffs Island and it is good to hear them once again. (By the way, does anyone know the name of that island?) I also saw the geese take off one day to go out to feed. That was a beautiful sight.

MORE CHRISTMAS CONCERTS
One of the events I enjoy at this time of year is the Fort Benton Elementary School and the Fort Benton High School Christmas Concerts.
The K-4 concert is on the Tuesday the 13th at 7:00 p.m. If you weren’t there or not aware of it, you have missed it. All three (3) of the concerts will be held in the beautiful Fort Benton Elementary school auditorium.
On Wednesday the 14th, the High School Concert will be held at 7:00 p.m. On Tuesday the 20th at 7:00 p.m. will be the 5th through 8th grade Concert.
All of the youngsters and teenagers work very hard for these concerts and for me they are very professional. Thanks to Margie and Eric for their putting together these concerts. As always I would like to see the auditorium filled to capacity. See you there!
WINTER SPORTS SEASON
One of the things I like about winter, as opposed to the many I have told you I do not like, is the winter sports season.
I love watching basketball because I always wanted to play. As a girl I wasn’t much into wrestling. I do keep up with the wrestling reports in the River Press and know that we have now and have had great and winning teams and individuals. I love it when they put Fort Benton on the map.
A huge bunch of roses to the middle school basketball girls’ team for 1st place and the boy’s 3rd. What a boost not only to the teams but to their supporters. It excites the whole town when Fort Benton is #1 again.
The 8th grade girls who will go on to play with the varsity team must be worn out after playing a season of basketball already. Of course, I look forward to a really exciting season for 2016 and 2017.
All the dates of the games are now on my calendar as I cut the schedule out of the Fort Benton sports section. Watch carefully because the games are not always on Fridays. It should be an exciting time and I’ll see you there.
ASSESSMENT MEETINGS
I did not make it to any of the assessment meetings. My only excuse is that it was too cold to go out and snow had to be cleaned off the truck.
Several people I talked with said they wondered why the meetings were held at this time of year when everyone is so busy with Christmas. I am anxious to read the results in the River Press this week.
COOKIE WALK
If you did not make it to the Golden Age Senior Center Cookie walk last Friday you missed the most mouth-watering treats ever. The variety made it difficult to choose but I managed without too much thought I went back to my kitchen with 2# of the most delightful array of goodies.
Ladies of the Senior Center, I want you to know how much I appreciate all your hard work. I want you to know that I think of you every time I devour one of those cookies. You are the hardest working group and give so much of your time to keep the Center going. You have made it a home away from home. It is delightful to spend time there.
TUESDAY NIGHT DINNER
Because December began on a Thursday the Tuesday night dinner at the Senior Center will be on the 20th which is the 3rd Tuesday of the month,
Be sure and sign up early because they can only accommodate 48 people. The December dinner seems to be the most popular because of the season. Everyone seems to be in a holly, jolly mood.
I just wanted to mention this little item because perhaps you did not know or realize what it is. At the dinner there is a 50/50 drawing. If everyone would buy 1 ticket the winner would receive $24.00 and the Center would receive $24.00. Every $24.00 is a help to the Center income. So please be generous and buy a ticket. You may be the next winner.
AROUND TOWN
Have you wondered about when the old rectory was going to be moved? I inquired and found that it is ready to go but they must wait for the ground to freeze. The rectory is too heavy to move now because it would sink into the soft ground. Now we know that it will be a while before it is gone. Take you pictures now before the space is vacant.
I used to take a lot of pictures and the one I feel sad about because I didn’t take a picture, was the grain elevator across from the Old Depot. I knew that it was going to be torn down but I did not get there soon enough to take a picture. You do not get a second chance once it is gone.
NEXT C.C.P.A.
It will be almost 2 months until the next Chouteau County Performing Arts program on January 31st. Look forward to it because it will be the songs of Nat King Cole. It is titled “Too Wonderful for Words,” and it will be. “Mona Lisa” comes to mind and it is still popular today. See you there!
DECORATIONS
Have you taken your yearly ride around town to see the Christmas decorations? Marvin Brodock won the prize for the best decorated house. It was a very difficult decision to choose a winner because there were so many great entries. I am enjoying a house down the street from me belonging to Joe Bach. It looks like the entrance to Santa’s house. I saw Joe putting up the lights the Saturday before Thanksgiving and that evening he turned them on. I did not have many decorations around my house before I moved.
Behind me, Mariah Ball put lights all along her white fence and I am enjoying looking out my kitchen window at that colorful display. The two things I like the most about Christmas, as opposed to those I do not like, are the music and the lights.
SQUIRRELS BACK
I wrote a while back that I did not have many birds visiting my bird feeders. Previously I did not feed the birds in the spring and summer thinking they could find their own food. I thought that they had a more difficult time in the winter finding food. My feeders were always filled every day during the fall and winter. I had a conversation with Karen, who lives near me, this past week and she only feeds the birds in the spring and summer. She said that birds had to have many trees around to nest. I do not have any trees but my neighbor has two. Karen said once spring comes the birds will be at my feeders. (This is another good reason to count off the days until spring beside the days getting longer.)
Well, this started out to be a squirrel story and I am so happy that a squirrel has been visiting my squirrel feeder. It has been a week now since the peanuts in the shell have been disappearing. I know that it is a squirrel because he leaves the shells. When birds took the peanuts they did not leave the shells. If anyone around me has trouble with squirrels, please let me know and I will solve the problem.
