HOW I WISH
How I wish I had written the thank you from Laurie Reddig to the City Crew. Laurie hit on every subject. I have so many times thought about how to thank them for the things they have done for me but I never got around to it.
Just recently I found a problem that needed attention immediately. On the Wednesday before Summer Celebration I was visiting my newly planted tree when I looked over the Levee. It was covered with weeds, so much so that the sandstone was completely covered. I was advised not to call Skip because he was so busy with preparations for the Celebration.
I fretted over it for a day because I knew that many people would be sitting on the Levee for the fireworks. I decided to call Skip on Thursday. It was not a matter of spraying because it was too late for that. On Friday when I checked the Levee every weed was gone. They must have been pulled out. How thankful I was but did not verbally express it or write about it.
Another example was when I and my other “scooter-ists” found it difficult to travel the circle by the Lewis and Clark statue. At either end there was about a 2 in. space with no sidewalk. I called and the next time I went downtown I found that the spaces on both ends had been filled with gravel making it easy to go across.
I could go on and on of stories about the City Crew that have kept out City of Fort Benton clean and tidy over the years I have been here. So, thanks to Laurie I now have my opportunity to say THANK YOU CITY CREW. You are my heroes. Now…I do not want to leave anyone out of the loop. I have so much to be thankful for from every organization, all of our volunteer Firemen, EMT’s, family, neighbors and friends. You are all responsible for making the second part of my life a happy and contented one.
How I wish….I could have made it to the Geraldine celebration as written by Robyn Scribner. I will make an effort to be there next year. I know I missed a great time.
I congratulate our sister town of Geraldine for what they get accomplished for a small town. I personally know how much volunteer work goes into Fort Benton’s Summer Celebration. You are a fabulous small town who came up with fabulous ideas to make your celebration special. Thank you for your efforts.
LIONS GOLF FUND RAISER
There is always something to do in Fort Benton. If you cannot find something to suit your time and energy then lay back and enjoy the lazy days of summer. If you feel the need to get out and mingle then get up to the Golf Course on Saturday morning and not only have a fun day with other golfers but to support the Lions Club who are raising funds for diabetes.
The Lions expect participants from all over the State of Montana but most of all can expect support from the generous residents of Fort Benton. See you there!
BOATS, BLUES AND BREWS
After the Golf Fund Raiser is over, come on downtown for an enjoyable evening of music, music, music. Read the River Press of last week for the details of the time and place. It was a great success last year and I am sure that many people have looked forward to the event being repeated.
This is the event to enjoy jazz and blues music. You do not have to make a trip to New Orleans and especially not at this time of storm problems. (I feel so much empathy for those people who are affected as I know personally what they are going through. My home in Michigan was hit by a tornado on March 20, 1976. It is devastating to the family and neighbors.)
FARMERS MARKET
I know that for years the Hutterites have come to town on Thursdays to sell their veggies, eggs, and bread door to door. That may keep you from frequenting the Farmers Market but it offers more than just veggies, eggs, and bread. There were 4 vendors last Thursday who offered sour dough bread, and cinnamon rolls. These are all fresh baked items by local residents. They were all sold out. The baked goods sold out quickly and so I hope that those who bake them double their recipes.
More Vendors are welcome. Just give Connie and Chandee a call. Their numbers were in last week’s River Press. See you there.
FACE THE STATE
This program comes on every Sunday morning. It is all about Montana and what is going on. It is not political, (At least I have not yet found it to be so.) A few weeks ago, it was about trafficking. Do you think it doesn’t happen in Montana? If you think it does not, then you are wrong! It does. You would have found out some statistics and what is going on.
I think that everyone in Montana should watch Face The State and learn. Perhaps it may change or save some young girl or boy’s life. Please try to listen although it comes on at 6:30 a.m. Sometimes it is repeated at 9:00 a.m. Give it a try and learn. If that is too early for you, record it and watch it at another time.
BE KIND
Last week I wrote to be kind. That came from old material I was going through. I came across a story that appeared in “Chicken Soup for the Soul.” It told about some graffiti that read “Practice Random Acts of Kindness and Senseless Acts of Beauty.” What a beautiful story it was, as were all the stories in the Chicken Soup books. I try to be kind and do a good deed a day. It is difficult as we all seem to be busy doing what? The good thing is to keep on trying and perhaps someday you may touch someone who needs a hug.
Perhaps I am watching too many Hallmark movies or thinking about “It’s a Wonderful Life.” Life seems so easy going, about family, kind, and perfect. I know that it is not real but still continue to wish for things to be better.
Have a wonderful week and when you see me around town remember to let me know who you are.
GOD BLESS AMERICA, OUR TROOPS, POLICE OFFICERS, FIREMEN AND WOMEN, FOREST FIRE FIGHTERS AND EMT’S.

WANTED
A person who may have purchased author Sue Grafton books at the Summer Celebrations book sale at the Library. Please call me and I will have a deal for you.
I have had an ad in the River Press for the last two weeks but did not get a response. I hope that this message will get out to the readers especially visitors, former residents, alumni, and those who live out of state.
FLATHEAD CHERRIES
The report about the cherries was that it was a mad house at last week’s Farmers Market. The pre-orders were not yet filled while the crowd formed a long line. Over 400 lbs. were sold in a short time and some pre-orders did not get their cherries. By the time this paper is published, those people will be eating or will have eaten their cherries. I was also told that the cherries are huge this year. Bon Appetit.
OUT OF THE MOUTHS OF BABES
Great Gramma was taking care of great grandson who is just a little over 3 years old. He is putting two small teddy bears into a jar. When Gramma asks why he was doing that, he replied “They have to hibernate you know.”
THE COUNTY FAIR
Are you ready? I have been waiting anxiously since Summer Celebration. I never knew what a County Fair was when I lived in Michigan. I am sure there were some but not in the tri-county area where I lived.
I love all the displays, the programs in the evening, and most of all the food that I only allow myself once a year, beginning with breakfast, then lunch, and later supper. It is another three days that I do not have to cook.
I also love helping the Lions Club collect parking fees because I see friends and neighbors that also are enjoying the fair.
After studying the fair book it looks as though there are going to be many additions to the days and evenings events.
So come on down to the fairgrounds with a smile on your face and have a wonderful time. See you there and be sure you tell me who you are because I am not seeing well these days.
CHOUTEAU COUNTY PERFORMING ARTS
The first performance, which is Pub Night, will be a month after the Fair. That will be September 15th and if you liked Johnny Cash you should be there. Actually you should be there whether or not you liked Johnny Cash. Just listening to the Tennessee Three is worth the evening.
By the way! Do you have your season ticket yet? Randy is at the Farmers Market every week with discounted tickets that have your name on it. Be an early bird and get that hot ticket in your purse or pocket. It is a terrific program.
FACE THE STATE
I encourage you to watch PBS Face the State on Sunday mornings and check your menus because it is repeated at other times and days.
A week ago Sunday, the half hour show was about Montana roadway fatalities. If only everyone would “WEAR SEATBELTS” the fatality rate would be almost zero.
I learned to wear my seat belt because of several fatal accidents I heard about. It was reported that if many of those fatalities had their seat belts on they would still be alive. This is a plea statement, please pay attention. I was happy to learn that some of the new vehicles will not start unless the seat belt or belts are not on. Great idea but it will take a long while before all vehicles have that lifesaving idea.
BIRD FEEDER
My Dish satellite is in front of my living room window. Along with a pole that holds a bird feeder. Last year I had a crop of corn growing from seeds that birds knocked out of the feeder.
This year I have beautiful sunflowers growing for the same reason. One day last week my TV did not come on and the message on the screen said that there was an obstruction in front of the satellite connection. I went out to check and found sunflowers growing and covering the dish. I pulled them back and when I returned to the living room the TV had a picture. I hope that I do not have to choose between watching TV and the sunflowers. I know that the flowers would win.
PLEASE GOD BLESS AMERICA, OUR TROOPS, POLICE OFFICERS, FIRE FIGHTERS, AND EMT’s. PROTECT OUT CHILDREN FROM HARM. PROTECT INOCENT BY-STANDERS IN CONFLICT SITUATIONS. GRANT US PEACE.

CHAMBER of COMMERCE
A very great evening was had by all last Saturday evening at the Ag Center for the Chamber of Commerce annual meeting. The formal dinner and speaker was replaced by a fun evening of choosing food prepared by local restaurants, a live auction, a silent auction, and topped off by a terrific band from Hardin, MT. The dance floor was a popular place and was always full of dancers. It was such fun to watch them. The band played songs, old and new, that were familiar.
I spoke with the female singer while they were setting up. I asked what kind of music they play and she asked me what I liked. I told her that I liked “old country” and later in the evening she dedicated a Patsy Cline song to me.
The evening began at 6:00 p.m. and it was about 10:00 p.m. when I arrived home.
I hope that the Chamber continues with this venue. It was not that I did not enjoy the formal dinner and especially the speaker, but it was down to earth enjoyment.
COUNCIL MEETING
Today is Monday the 16th and I am on the agenda for the City Council meeting this evening. The reason being two women who live at the Sunrise Bluffs asked me if there was anything I could do about a handicapped fishing site in Fort Benton. A location will be difficult to find as the Levee is steep. The new extension of the Levee Walking Trail would not accommodate a wheelchair. I am sure it will all be worked out and I just wanted all you handicapped fisher persons to know that perhaps it may happen. I did not realize how many fishermen and women there were around town.
Please help support this project by word of mouth or a phone call to our City Hall.
FACE THE STATE
Every Sunday morning on PBS a program called Face the State is featured. I think it should be an ordinance that every household watch it. It covers many subjects about Montana and so far it is not political. Recently it has touched on agriculture, old age problems, and this past Sunday it was about weather. It is a subject talked about here, there, and everywhere. It is the most talked about subject and I like to hear about statistics and records. Our River Press has had great articles about Fort Benton’s weather. I think we all agree that this was a tough winter and wonder what our summer will be like, (if we ever get a spring and summer.”
FRIDAY THE 13th
What a day that was. It began snowing the evening before and when I woke that Friday morning it was snowing beautifully. The large snowflakes were covering everything. I guessed the snowfall was about 3 or 4 inches. Then it stopped snowing and the sun came out. I am sure that spring began at that point. I had 4 appointments that day so I was out and about all over town. I was thrilled to see people with shorts on, no winter coats, light jackets and sweaters, and driving with windows down. It begins getting dark about 8:00 p.m. and I am loving it. Enjoy because time flies when you are having fun.
SCHOOL PROTECTION
I am not very observant and I was concerned that when I went to the Elementary School and rang the bell for entry, the buzzer rang immediately to let me in. Then I was told that there is a camera up in the corner and you can be seen before the buzzer lets you in. It is the same at the High School.
I am very pleased about a Police Officer having an office at the school. God forbid we ever have an incident but it is better to be safe than sorry.
NEW COMPUTER
I am doing this article on my new computer. So far I have had about one hour of training in Windows 10 and so far so good. The problem may come when I try to send it but I will test it shortly. I was having a great deal of trouble with spell check with my old computer because it had a blue background with white print. I could not make the print larger and this computer’s spell check is quite different and much easier to manage.
I know this does not interest those of you who do not have a computer but many of you do. At this point in my life I wish I had never started with one. On the other hand I think about the 19 years I have been doing the View and all the wonderful connections I have with family and friends using e-mail. Yes, thinking it over I am happy with my computer because it kept me connected with the world.
