MOTHER NATURE
Just when I sang her praises last week she turns around and gives us another winter blast. Snow and cold are no longer in my vocabulary and if all this snow and cold is not gone by Easter, I am never going to have anything to do with her again. There I said it and now I feel better. Are you all behind me?

EASTER
This fun holiday is only a week and a half away. Have you got your Easter bonnets ready? Back when I was young, the Easter outfit was a very big thing. We had to wear hats to Church then and it was a blast to see the hats.  The colors were pinks, purples, yellows, and greens.  Dyed hard boiled eggs have now been replaced with plastic. Hats are no longer needed and jeans have replaced dresses. We seniors long for the old traditions but have to go along with the changes. Only our memories remain and perhaps an old hat or two remain in a closet.

Easter parades are also a thing of the past. If you lived in a big city (which I did not,) you and your whole family would walk up and down an area that was judged for the most attractive outfits.

The real meaning of Easter has been lost as Christmas.  It is all commercial now and has become a mania of shopping for gifts and candy.  Only the dentists benefit. Amen for now.

WHO DUN IT?
I hope that I am not boring you with this story but I must say that it has kept me amused during this dreary winter days.

I must be watching too many “Garage Sale Mysteries.” I am working on the elimination process to track down the person who is decorating the hollow tree at the corner of 22nd and Front St.  Since no one will own up to decorating the tree, I have several clues as to who it might be.

The first clue is that it must be a woman who loves to decorate and is very artistic. Secondly she used the community garden (because of the pumpkin,) and third must live in the neighborhood of the hollow tree. From the direction of the footprints, she and her helper came in from Front

I thought this person had given up the project because of the snow and drifts and there were no decorations for Valentine’s Day or St. Patty’s Day. I put a Valentine Heart in the tree but it blew away. I had a friend staple the leprechaun to the tree for St. Patty’s Day.

This afternoon, Sunday the 18th, I used my walker for support to get to the tree. As I stepped on the drift I would sink into my knees. Lo and behold, there was a welcoming wooden rabbit.

I would really like to know who you are so we can work together. I promise that I will never reveal who you are.  Please give me a call and we can discuss further holidays over coffee. I also am offering a reward of 2 dozen Lemon Bars to anyone who will give me information. (That is not a joke!)

The jolly Leprechaun has left his position on the hollow treed. (I think he went south.) In his place is taken by no other than my Peter Rabbit. I know that because his vest has his name on it. It is appropriate that he has taken up residence next to the community garden even though there is nothing there for him and Farmer Brown is not around. Perhaps Peter is just going to wait until summer. He joins the Welcome Rabbit to wish you a very happy Easter.

I hope you were able to visit with the Leprechaun but Front St. and 22nd were so terrible ruddy, it was almost impossible to drive much less walk. I will just have to be content with his picture in the River Press.

LOMA DAYS
Just a reminder that Loma Days will be held on April 7th, the Saturday after Easter. See you there.

BINGO
The last VFW Bingo will be on March 28th at the Club House at 7:00 p.m.

The VFW has been plagued with sickness and snow which cancelled man of their scheduled games this winter. Perhaps spring will be a little kinder and this last Bingo night of the season will take place. See you there.

EASTER EGG HUNT
On Saturday, the 31st of March and the day before Easter, will be the annual Easter Egg Hunt sponsored by the Lions Club of Fort Benton. Check the River Press for the times and locations for each age group. If you have never watched this hunt or had kiddos hunting, then you should go to the park for a fun few minutes. I love watching the infant to3 year olds and the 4 to5 year olds. It warms your heart to see the loving parents trying to help their little egg hunters. A good time is had by all.

C.C.P.A.
The ever popular PUB NIGHT will be on Saturday April 7th at the Ag Center. The Pan Blanco band from Bozeman sounds very exciting. The word SALSA is a dance that I hope fills the dance floor. If you do not dance then just come and enjoy the music and people watching. See you there.

HELLO
Some of my faithful following have contacted me by way of word of mouth or cards. I want them to know that I thank them for their concern and they would be Jeff in Great Falls, Marilyn in WA. and Ginger in AZ.

I am supposed to get a new computer in the next few weeks and will contact you with a letter. Just know that you are in my thoughts too.

GOD BLESS AMERICA, OUR TROOPS, POLICE OFFICERS, FIRE FIGHTERS, AND EMT’S. KEEP OUR SCHOOLS SAFE AND HELP THOSE SUFFERING FROM THE TERRIBLE WEATHER STORMS.

SEPTEMBER MOON
Not only is September my favorite month but the September moon is too. It always seems brighter, silvery, and as the Kiddos say today…COOL.

Its name is the Full Corn Moon or the Full Harvest Moon which also accounts for why it is my favorite. Actually all of the Moon names come from the Native Americans. They found the Full Corn Moon the time to harvest. Two out of three years The Full Harvest Moon comes in September. Because it is closes to the Equinox, farmers can work for into the night as the moon rises earlier and set sets later than any other moon. So enjoy!

The full moon is on Wednesday the 6th this month. You may not get this information by the 6th but I am sure you will know it by the bright “Shine on, shine on Harvest Moon.”

SUNRISE BLUFFS
Another of their great Pinochle Parties will be held on Monday, September 11th at 11:00 p.m. As Usual there will be great prizes and refreshments. Please call Joan P. at 622-4212to let them know that you will be attending. These games have grown in popularity and a good way to get to know those who love the game. Have a wonderful time Folks. Everyone is welcome and it is open to all.

C.C.P.A.
It is time for the season to begin again and what a beginning it will be. On Wednesday, September 27th at 7:00 p.m. at the Fort Benton Elementary School auditorium will appear the Twin Kennedy’s. At Consortium in January, the Twins were a smashing success. They are identical twins and the only way you can tell them apart is that one plays the fiddle and the other the guitar. They both sing and their music consists of country, jazz, and classical.

You will be completely captivated and trying to tell them apart is nearly impossible. They are so entertaining that you will want them back again in Fort Benton. It is not too late to buy your seasons ticket at the discounted price. Call Randy Morger at 622-5405 for your season’s tickets. Look over the flyer you received in the mail to see what you have in store for you. If there is something that would not interest you…give you ticket to someone else. Please support the Chouteau County Performing Arts if you go or do not go to the shows. Every organization in town needs support one way or another. Let us support one another as much as possible. See you there.

LIONS
This will be the biggest garage sale of all time. This “biggie” of the year will be held on Saturday, September 30th from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. It will be in the Commercial Building at the Chouteau County Fair Grounds. It will be inside and not outside like previous years. That will be great change weather wise. We might have some rain by then.” One person’s throw away is another person’s treasure.” I know you will find a special treasure there that you can’t live without.

What I am asking here is for your donations. The best part of this sale is that the Lions will gladly pick up your donations NOW in preparation for the sale. Please call Don F. at 622- 5274, Henry S. at 622-4204, or Brian E. at 570-1399 and they will be Johnny-on-the-spot with picking up whatever you have to offer.

This sale is in coordination with the City of Fort Benton’s fall cleanup. Please use that cleanup program to get rid of junk. I know it is going from one end of town to the other but after our entire town is only 2 miles long and 4 blocks wide. (We no longer even have a blinking light. Now that is rural Montana. This is how I describe my town to outsiders.)

Please support the Lions Club because of the good works they do. The scholarships alone are a big deal and every penny of your donations goes toward good works. They have no administrative costs.  See you there.

HELLO
I would like to say hello to some special friends that read the View regularly. Dr. Jeff who lives in Great Falls checks on me weekly and tells friends of mine here in Fort Benton to say hello to me. That’s made my day several times lately and I appreciate the concern.

PIE DAY
On Friday the 15h we pie eaters welcome back for the season the once a month PIE DAY. This month it will not be on the 2nd Friday of the month but on the 3rd because of schedule conflicts. I do not bake pies any longer although I loved doing that at one time. I do not think I ever baked a pie for PIE DAY but have enjoyed them since they began years ago. (I tend to concentrate on Lemon Bars and that is my joke of the week.)

So to support the Golden Age Senior Center and support their efforts, please be there on Friday the 15th at 1:00 p.m. Bring your friends and neighbors and enjoy a great cup of coffee and a piece of lovingly baked pie.

I know that there are many new people in town and I invite them to come to the Golden Age Senior Center. There may be some activity that would interest you or perhaps would you like to have lunch at the reasonably priced meal at 12:00 p.m. on weekdays and 1:00 on Sundays. There is also the option of Meal-on-Wheels delivered right to your home. (Check the River Press for the weekly menu schedules.) There is also a Tuesday night dinner every 3rd Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. These are fun fabulous dinners that Chef Betty with her aid Brenda labor over. Added to that are games, puzzles, and musical entertainment. Several times the C.C.P.A. concert is the same evening at 7:00 p.m. and I call it the dinner/theatre evening. Please come and join us and made some new friends.

GOD BLESS AMERICA, OUR TROOPS, PLICE OFFICERS, EMT’s, VOLUNTEER FIREMEN, and FIRE FIGHTERS all around MONTANA.

Due to popular demand, I was talked into breaking my promise put in last week’s edition of the River Press. I said that I would not mention again about the wearing red on Fridays, putting a green bulb in your porch light and most important to fly the American flag. I had become discouraged about not seeing the results that I would have liked to see and so I decided never to urge people to do as I do. However, I had several very patriotic persons ask me to keep reminding readers that to fly a flag is showing love of your country. I do promise though that I will not mention it every week.

As to the “Support Our Troops” shirts I am asking if anyone has an L size that they will sell to me. I wash mine every week and it is getting worn out. Thanks for your time and trouble.

View From The Bridge 6/4/14

VIEW from the BRIDGE
By Muncie
6/4/14

HELLO
It has been 10 weeks since I last submitted a View from the Bridge. What happened after my Sweetheart went away was an expected replacement of my right knee.  It took place April 30th and I spent 3 days at Benefis Hospital.  From there I came back to Fort Benton and stayed at the Missouri River Medical Center for 12 days of therapy.  I was told that I would have several more months of recuperation and so my goal is to get back to the View in September.

I knew most of the residents and enjoyed their company when we had Activities hour twice a day.  I was thoroughly spoiled by having breakfast, lunch, and dinner served in the dining room.  When I returned to my room, my bed was made.  I took several naps a day because of the medication.  To describe the experience, it was like a vacation.

I walked as much as I could and the first time I went by the Nurses station, I was applauded.  I told them that I was training for the 5K Audra Morger Bonilla Fun Run at Summer Celebration.

Another fun thing was the portable DVD and CD player that the Morger Kids bought me for Christmas.   I am a night owl and do not go to bed until midnight. I found that the hospital closed down about 9:P00 p.m. I watched a movie every night without disturbing anyone. I am planning on writing a book titled “From the Outside In,” about this operation, Hospice, ins and outs of recovery and the mistakes I made being a care taker.

I would be happy to share experiences with any of you contemplating knee surgery.  I know that everyone is different but I can give you a few good pointers.  It makes me happy though that so many of you readers have asked when the View is coming back.  I just feel that I need some rest time to get some order back in my life.  Believe me when I say, I miss keeping in touch.  Since I am not “out and about” much anymore, it is a little difficult to keep up with activities around town.

I am volunteering at the Information Center on Tuesdays and if I hear of a good “small world story,” I may surprise you.

HELP and MORE HELP
What I need help with is selling 100 more tickets for the Billy Swensgard memorial stone.   (Remember that Billy was the only soldier from Fort Benton killed in Vietnam.)  Quite a few months ago Diane Jones and I were very disillusioned by not getting the Vietnam Wall to Fort Benton this coming July.  The mayor of Great Falls booked the Wall for the week after ours and we had to cancel.  We could not compete with Great Falls who received a huge grand for their project.

We had to raise the money ourselves and we started by a raffle that included an American Flag that flew over the Capitol, two awesome wreathes, and a patriotic quilt.  (If you would like to see these prizes, they are in the window of the Pioneer Lodge.)

We cannot purchase the Memorial Stone until we have the funds to pay for it.  I am asking; if you have not yet purchased a ticket, please do so.  The cost is $5.00 for 1 ticket and 3 for $10.00.  Please contact Diane Jones @ 406-270-7021 or me @899-1380.  We will mail or deliver to you.

Our plans for the dedication of the Swensgard Memorial were originally planned for Memorial Day.  Our next goal is the 4th of July if we sell the tickets quickly.  The plans are to place the stone on a slab of cement with a wrought iron chain fence around it so it will look like a memorial.  It will be placed on Veterans Way.

Diane and I are looking forward to hearing from you.  This is another way of remembering our Veterans and the reason we are protected and free.

GOD BLESS AMERICA, OUR TROOPS and WEAR RED ON FRIDAYS.

WEAR RED ON FRIDAY
I would like to tell everyone who purchased a “Support Our Troops” t-shirt, how proud I am of you.  I was told that the week after most of the shirts were sold, Fort Benton was a “Sea of Red.”  Please remember to continue wearing your shirt on Fridays.  I would like to see that “Sea of Red.”
