MARCH
I always remember as a child in school to ‘Beware of the Ides of March.” I was always afraid of March 15th and I did not learn until later what it was all about.  Although nothing horrendous has happened to me on the 15th, it did to Julius Caesar.  He actually set up the Julian calendar and the 15th as the Ides not knowing that he would be killed on that day in 1798.

I checked the dictionary for the meaning of Ides and only found that Caesar made the 15th of March, May, July and October the Ides. The other months are on the 13th. BUT, what are Ides? I did some research and asked a few people who are smarter than a 5th grader and no one knows. It is like our Fort Benton High School song that says we will profit by your creed. Who remembers what the creed is?

For me, it cannot possibly mean anything, or should it? I am not superstitious but all I know is that on the 15th I am extra careful in everything I do as the ides might get me. (That is my joke of the week.)

As the temperature warms and the ground begins to thaw, earth worm’s casts begin to appear heralding the return of the robin. (Our robin appearance in the middle of February here in Fort Benton hopefully means an early spring.) The name of the Full Crow Moon comes from the sawing of the crows signaling the end of winter. (Now as I wait to hear from the readers of the View about the return of the meadowlark, I also would like to hear about the first sounds of the cawing of a crow.)

It is also called the Full Crust Moon because snow melt crusts during the day and freezes at night.

Another name is the Full Tapping Moon and is the time to tap maple trees for syrup. The final name alerted the settlers to the last full moon of winter and was called the Full Lenten Moon. (Take your pick but I like the Full Tapping Moon best and I am sure those pancakes do too.)

The full moon this month is on Sunday the 12th. Enjoy the Full Lenten Moon as it is the last full moon of winter.

ROBINS
I am backing up to the time I wrote about the first robin sighting. I also received a call about a sighting but the connection of phones was not good and I could not hear the name or phone number. Would that person, if they read this, please call me again? I would like to give you some credit too for what it is worth in the View.

THE TRIBUNE
Hey Jackie Campbell!  Did you see your name in the Great Falls Tribune on  Tuesday the 21st, in the Montana section “Across the Big Sky. They, whoever they is, referred to me as a journalist for the River Press. I have been called by that title several times and I am kind of getting used to it. It is better than a lot of other things I have been called. (This is my second joke of the week.)

THRILL OF THE  WEEK
The Regional Basketball Tournaments last week were nail biting, blood pressure upheaval, and nerve racking events. Talk about excitement and down to the last few seconds of play and it will keep us enjoying the memories  for weeks.

Our Girls did a fantastic job of it especially the win over Box Elder on Thursday afternoon. I really should not single out that game because all their games were AWESOME. I have been watching the Longhorns and Lady Longhorns for 23 years now and the excitement grows. I also hear from “Old Timers” about games years ago that have never been forgotten.

Just a little private side note that I want to mention. My grandson, Grayson Bonilla, moved to Helena when he was in the 2nd grade. There are 5 freshman girls on the team and 4 of those were his classmates when he went to Fort Benton Elementary.  I cannot believe that they are 15 years old now. Another shocker is they they are or already have started DRIVING LESSONS.

Another shocker for me is the fact that when Grayson turns 16, he will own a car.  Some of you will remember that story but for those of you who do not, here it is.

A fund raiser was held for his Mom, Audra Bonilla, and Grandpa Bonilla donated his ’53 Buick that Grayson called “The Watermelon.” It went from a raffle ticket to a man who was visiting from Germany. He gave it to the friend he was visiting to put in his Antique Car Shop in Rudyard for restoring and safe keeping until Grayson turned 16.  It will be too late for this year’s Summer Celebration Parade but  I expect it to be in next year. (He should be a really good driver by then.  I may even want to ride with him. (That is my 3rd joke of the week.)

LAUGHTER
I attended the last Cancer Support Group meeting at the Club House a couple of weeks ago. I was told that there would be lots of laughter because one of the members was going to entertain us with jokes. Not only did she tell us man jokes but she gave each of us a joke to read. It was great fun and spending an evening with all of these cancer survivors was a blessing for me. They are the bravest men and woman I have ever known. They are always smiling, laughing, and appreciate everything around them and their lives. If you are down, depressed, and unhappy you should spend a day with one of them. I know that you will never complain again.

Please support your Chouteau County Cancer Support Group. It is an organization that does everything for cancer patients. They are non-profit and raise all their own funds.  ll of the new patients are given a handmade quilt made by the busy fingers of the Quilting Guild or women who just make them because they love to do it. Thank goodness we have people like that in our community.

PONDERISMS
“Why does a round pizza come in a square box?”

AMERICAN FLAGS
Now you only have 3 months left to get your American Flag and hang it. Just do it!

I know that I am a nag about this subject but I feel strongly about it. A friend took me to lunch last week on a beautiful day that was warm and the sun was shining.  We cruised all the streets of Fort Benton and I saw only 1 GREEN LIGHT BULB in a porch light. The green bulbs are a show of support for our Troops. It is also a sign of your patriotism which is a sign of love of your country. I am absolutely positive that you all love our county so display it. Just do it!

GOD BLESS AMERICA, OUR TROOPS, THOSE WHO PROTECT US and WEAR RED ON FRIDAYS.

KUDOS
Wow!  I am going around with a very big, almost bursting, EGO this past week. Ken and Henry complimented me about View from the Bridge and put it in writing. It cheered up my whole week.

Most of the readers who talk to me have said they read the back page first. Of course that is what I do because I like to see how much space I took up. I can check on my computer on how many spaces I have used but somehow it looks different when it is actually printed.

I do have a great regard for all the Service personnel that give of their time and talents to serve the public. I really enjoyed the story about the Chouteau County Dispatch Center. What a tremendous service 911 is. Have you ever been to the Sheriff’s office and seen the set up for 911? It reminded me of all that is going on when a missile is launched. There are all kinds of blinking lights and other things happening that I have no clue as to what they are.

I called 911 eight (8) times in 2013 for my Sweetheart Wally. The time I felt bad about calling was at 5:00am when Wally fell out of bed. I could not lift him. All of those EMT Volunteers had to be wakened. The other seven (7) times it was because of Wally’s heart problems. Can you even imagine my gratitude?

I could go on all day about the Police Department has done for me. I have never had any personal dealings with the Fire Department but I know they are there when needed. All of these above mentioned are such dangerous jobs especially in today’s society when some seriously mentally ill individuals have weapons in their possession.

Yes, I honor all of these organizations and that is why I sign off the View with GOD BLESS all of them.

FOUR CHAPLAINS
A week ago Sunday there was a program honoring the Four Chaplains who gave up their life jackets to others when the ship was sinking. They went down holding hands and praying. It is an inspiring story and the program was put on by the American Legion and the VFW and so well done.

There were only about 12 residents, those who were part of the program, and the Color Guard in attendance. This was the first time that this program was held in Fort Benton. I realize that it was on Super Bowl Sunday and there will be adjustments next year on the time if it happens to fall on that Sunday. I would like to see the Community Bible Church filled to capacity because it is a program honoring our Troops.

C.C.P.A.
Last week’s presentation was one of the best ever with ventriloquist, Lynn Trefzger.  It was a constant stream of laughter. I really enjoyed her use of the audience and her spontaneous lines for each individual.

Another surprise was the introduction of Jace Thompson, 12 years old, living in Fort Benton. He did an act before Lynn and what a great comedian he is. Who knew? Jory, where have you been hiding his boy of yours?

I am going to suggest that Jace do a Christmas skit to perform at the Christmas Concert since it is all local entertainers. What do you think about that idea C.C.P.A. Board?

I would also like to see the auditorium filled to capacity. Please support C.C.P.A.

PIE DAY
Last Friday was Pie Day. In my observance, I think it was the most successful of all Pie Days.

As much as I write about various events around town so residents support those events…I was about to give up. It did not seem as though my writing/reminding about Pie Day, C.C.P.A., and other supporting events did much good. I was getting discouraged about it and actually thought about giving it all up.

But Pie Day was really great.  People were actually lined up to get their pie. Several tables were filled with 8 pie-eaters at each table. That was a tremendous improvement over the last time when there were 5 women only at the table. Now, some did come in a buy a piece of pie or a whole pie, but they are hard to count.

I was also pleased that I had a piece of my favorite pie, Cherry-Cranberry. I do not know who makes it but it has not been around for a while. It was so delicious and several at my table enjoyed it.
I really appreciate Pie Day and all of you Golden Age Women Members who bake those pies. I believe that there are only 3 months left for Pie Day before they are ended for the season. I’ll keep reminding you and see you there next month on the 2nd Friday at 1:00pm.

MARCH
I do not like the month of March for personal reasons. To add to my list was the Weatherman’s report that records show the month of March has more snow than any other month.

Since we have been enjoying almost spring like weather, it is depressing to think that March may bring us snow. I also realize that our Farmers need a snow cover for the winter wheat and that is the only reason I would welcome more snow. Actually, I like the snow…it is the cold blowing wind that is hard to take. We will just have to wait and see and no matter what comes along…we all share it.

ENTERTAINMENT
All regular meetings are planned for March.  There will be no C.C.P.A. until April 2nd. Oh, there is the St. Patty’s Day celebration at Amy’s Square Butte Country Club.  If any of the Organizations or Churches has any events planned, please let me know about two weeks in advance. There is always Bingo at the Club House sponsored by the VFW every 1st and 3rd Monday at 7:00pm. I’m hooked now.  I really enjoy the other addicts and we are a Bingo family. We would like some of the Old-Timers to come back and join us.

GOSPEL MUSIC FANS
Next Saturday, the 20th, at 2pm the Salvation Nation Music Group will perform at the Sunrise Bluffs. Please take time out from your busy schedules to attend this special program. Help to make a good showing of people in Fort Benton who appreciate great music.

FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY
After the first meeting, when the members decided to remain Friends of the Library or a Book Club, it is off and running. A first book was discussed and the next two meetings will have author/speakers who will share their books with us. The May meeting will be a pot-luck luncheon. It is not too late to join this fun group who are also like family.

GREEN BULBS
One night last week I drove home in the dark. In the four blocks of Main Street I saw two homes with one that had a green bulb in a lamp in the window and the other had a green bulb in the porch light. Please purchase a green bulb and install it on your home. Remember…it is my dream and you want to make me happy don’t you?

OBSERVATIONS
If a part of your body falls asleep, you can wake it up by shaking your head.

GOD BLESS AMERICA, OUR TROOPS, OUR POLICE FORCES, OUR VOLUNTEER FIREMEN, and OUR EMTS.

MARCH
It is not my favorite month. Yes, spring arrives but it is such a struggle for it to get here. However, to say something good about it…the best thing the struggle seems to accomplish is the sunshine. We see it almost every day now and it surely cheers everyone up. There are many smiles and “have-a-great-day” around town. I have heard many conversations about planting vegetable gardens and flower gardens. We even saw a little green (it may have been wishful thinking,) showing as the snow melts.

We liked the way the City piled the snow on the boulevard because as it melts…all that good nitrogen feeds into the lawn. The snow and ice are not quite gone but the streets and sidewalks are easy to traverse. We always say in March, that we made it through another winter. Next week I will be reminding you to spring forward on your clocks. It is that time again.

T.C. POWERHOUSE
There is a new owner of this health-oriented, exercise business. Since Audra Morger Bonilla, Greg and Grayson moved to Helena last August, the building has been a tad lonely. There have been senior exercise and yoga classes but the machines were getting a little dusty. Kathy Waldo (most of you know her and if you do not, you should,) purchased the business and will be in the building daily Monday through Friday. She will not be there on Saturday or Sunday, but it will be available to members. Memberships are available by either stopping in (see what there is to offer,) or calling at 868-0660.

These days every thing you read, everything you see on TV, is geared toward a more healthful living. A great part of that is exercise. One example is when people say that they are tired all the time. The best way to combat that fatigue is to exercise. It is a fact that I used to fight vigorously but found it is the absolute truth. When you work out, your body relaxes and the adrenalin kicks in. Another common statement is, “I do not have time to exercise.” You do not have that option if you care about your health. Make the time and reap the rewards. Your body will thank you with more energy and stamina. Check it out for yourself and change your life.

WOMAN’S CLUB
Last week I blew the horn for the Golden Age Senior Center. This week I am going to do that very thing for the General Federation of Women’s Club of Fort Benton. That is the proper name for the Club, which is part of the General Federation all over the United States. If I am referring to just Fort Benton, I can call it Woman’s Club (it is so much shorter.)

To get on with their accomplishments, I would like to tell you, that as a whole, the Club participated in 80 projects, logged in 10,000 volunteer hours (isn’t that awesome,) and put $57,786.00 into Fort Benton’s economy. Are not those figures increditable?

Just think about 10,000 volunteer hours. If you divide those hours by 24 hours in a day, you come up with 416 (close enough) days. If you multiply 416 days at 24 hrs. a day, you have 9,984 hrs., divided by 8 gives you 1,248 days of work. To double check that, divide 10,000 hrs. by an 8 hr. work day and you have 1,250 days of volunteer work. Divide that by the 58 women who have paid dues this 2009-2010 year and you get an average of 21 ½ days or 172 hrs. for each one. Again, I say, incredible. Go, Woman’s Club.

Come join us on March 11th at noon in the Library. The Expedition will be serving the luncheon and if you are joining us for the first time, you will be our guest. Watch for the Woman’s Club article for phone numbers to call. Members…be a friend and invite a friend, (borrowing phrase from Friends of the Library.)

UP-COMING EVENTS
CHOUTEAU COUNTY PERFORMING ARTS will present the Mudd Bay Jugglers & Tune Stranglers on Tuesday, March 30th at 7:30 p.m. (I will check out that time change from the usual 7:00 p.m.)

The Mudd Bay Jugglers are a group of three men who not only juggle, dance, do lively music and they are comics that they weave into their act. The Tune Stranglers are a group of five men who play many instruments and every kind of music. It sounds like a lively evening so put it on your calendar now. I will remind you again.

Next month on April 15th will be the “Rave On Buddy Holly” Pub Night. Now that is one you do not want to miss. Check out Buddy on the inter-net and listen to songs that you seniors will remember from the ‘50’s. Our younger group should enjoy too, because Buddy was the first rock’n roller. Hey, even at my age, I enjoyed his singing.

MULLAN ROAD CONFERENCE - This is a huge event that will take place in Fort Benton from May 20th to the 22nd. It is the 150th anniversary of the completion of the road that was the first wagon road from Fort Benton to Fort Walla Walla, WA. For more details, check the Fort Benton web site (www.fortbenton.com) under special events to find complete information. Registration is necessary.

Some of the exciting events are on Thursday evening; the 20th there will be a reception in the Fort trading post, presentations at the Ag Center on Friday with lunch, a banquet in the evening, and on Saturday a field trip to the Sun River valley. (I am willing to wager that 99% of those who are reading this have never done that trip.) It sounds very exciting, so send this information to your history loving relatives and friends. “If you don’t know where you came from, you cannot know where you are going.” My favorite and I have mentioned it many times before is, “A people without a history is like the wind in the Buffalo Grass.”

OTHER EVENTS
If you have an event planned, please advise and I will try to let everyone be aware of the time, date and place. This would be in addition to your ads in the River Press.

SO LONG FOR NOW
I feel like I am missing something but cannot put my finger on it. A week from Sunday, the 14th we will be springing our clocks ahead. The “Ides of March” (when Julius Caesar was assassinated so do not turn your back on anyone,) is the 15th, The “Wear’n of the Green” is on the 17th, on the 19th the swallows return to Capistrano, and spring arrives on the 20th. That is quite a full month so keep busy and enjoy every minute of every day.  GOD BLESS AMERICA AND OUR PROTECTORS OVERSEAS.
