SENIOR CENTER
I think that by now everyone knows that the Golden Age Senior Center has recently made changes. They no longer will be open on Saturdays and Sundays.
Meals on Wheels will continue with this change. If you want Meals on W heels on Saturday and Sunday you must made arrangements ahead of time and fill out an application and return to the Center. Frozen meals will be delivered to you on Friday.
There will still be Tuesday night dinners starting again in September. Cinnamon rolls will still be served on the last Wednesday of each month. Menus for the month will be available close to the end of each month at the Center for the next month and in the River Press weekly. There is information about the Center on the back of the menus. It is very informative to read the back of the menus.
There are 578 residents over the age of 60 who vote. This is an approximate figure. All of these people could be a member of the Golden Age. It would help to support the Center. The dues are $10.00 a year due in January. Support is lacking in so many of our organizations. Please feel an obligation to join the Senior Center. You may not use it now but you never know when you may need a place to have lunch that is geared toward seniors or Meals on Wheels.
I hope this story will inspire you to support the Center by becoming a member this coming fall. The seniors that participate find the Center a home away from home. You are able to play cards or work on a puzzle. There is always a large, difficult puzzle in the works. There is also a game day once a month.
SUMMER CELEBRATION
Are as excited about Summer Celebration as I am? The schedule is awesome and I intend to cover as many events as I can. I know that what I like most is seeing friends that I have not seen for a long time. Please come up to me to say hello.
My step-daughter, Audra, has been gone for 7 years but her memory lives on in the Fun Run that is named after her. If you do not know the story, ask any of the volunteers that are helping to promote the race.
I have ridden my Go-Go the last couple of years. Will those of you who have scooters join me as the last ones in line?
SO LONG DEAR FRIEND
I was on my way to White Sulphur Springs Thursday morning when I heard about the passing of Ruth Sykes. She was one of the kindest, sweetest, most helpful people I have ever known. I will miss her at the Senior Center where she was a faithful hostess once a week. She always had my dinner pre-paid card out and punched when she saw me coming through the door.
I attended her 90th birthday party last February at the Golden Age and we had a wonderful visit. She will be missed and long remembered.
AMERICAN FLAGS
Of course, I know, that you all have your American Flags already hanging on your front porches for the 4th of July. Do you remember what I said that flying the flag showed your love of country. I know you all love your country
If you are not able to put up the bracket for your flag, call me and I will arrange to get it done. So, have a wonderful 4th and count your blessings.
EVENTS COMING UP
Fort Benton has Talent will take place on Sunday June 24th at 1:00 p.m. at the Old Fort Park. Be sure to sign up quickly as you only have a few days to prepare.
The Missouri River Breaks Triathlon is scheduled for Saturday July 7th to finish in Fort Benton. Look for registration information in the River Press.
There will be an Antique Flea Market in Virgelle on Sunday July 8th from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Boats, Blues, and Brews on Saturday, July 7th from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. will feature a free concert that will be held on Front St. by the Old Walking Bridge. Come on down
The Chouteau County Free Library and the Missouri Breaks Interpretive Center will liven Tuesdays up by hosting “Wild Trivia” every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month. For more information read the posters around town.
CLASS REUNIONS
• A Class Reunion is trying to get into the dress that you wore for graduation.
• A Class Reunion is seeing your principal and still being nervous.
• A Class Reunion is “bring homemade cookies” that you bought at the bakery.
• A Class Reunion is showing photos of your children….again, again, again, and again….and again.
• A Class Reunion is dancing with your school beau and trying to remember what you ever saw in him.
• A Class Reunion is finding it hard to believe that the balding man with the pot belly was the captain of the football team.
• A Class Reunion is introducing your husband to everyone except the classmate who you almost became your husband.

SUMMER BEGINS
On June 21st summer will begin. It is always a sad day for me because now the days will be getting shorter. It always seems to me that we do not have enough pleasant evenings that we can sit outside before the sun sets. I will try to enjoy the next three (3) months before it really gets dark early. I will not even think about what kind of winter we might have next in line. It is just rolling around too quickly to think about.
GOD BLESS AMERICA AND PUT YOUR HAND OVER YOUR HEART WHEN SINGING OR HEARING THE NATIONAL ANTHEM THIS 4th of JULY AND EVERY OTHER DAY.

FIREWORKS
Did you wonder why when there were a few minutes of darkness in the display? Someone told us that there was a boat in the river that held up the show. What really happened was that the computer failed and the rest of the show had to be manually done.
Did you know that fireworks were handled by a computer? I am so far behind in all this tech stuff. The only thing I would like to have is the vacuum that runs all by its self. What a blast that would be. Again I wonder if you still have to clean the dirt out of it.
JULY MOON
If you readers are tired of or do not read about the moons, please let me know. I have been repeating the same moon names for years now. I still enjoy it because I cannot retain the names and it is new information to me each year. I do enjoy knowing when the full moon will appear and when the finger nail moon first appears.
The July moon is called the Full Buck Moon. The antlers on the bucks begin to grow. It is also called the Thunder Moon which took place today (Sunday the 2nd.) It was 94 degrees according to my weather station. When I came to my computer room to work on the View, I keep the blind closed because the light shines into my screen. An hour later I went to the kitchen and found it very dark and raining. Then there was a loud clap of thunder with lightening to follow. It was raining too hard for me to go out and retrieve my flag.
A short time later the weather station read 86 degrees and the sun came out. I checked the flag and it was perfectly dry. It is no use to predict the weather. If you wait 5 minutes, it will change.
My husband Wally and I used to have a contest about who would see that finger nail moon first. Of course I always won just like I won the best rock-of-the-day when we went hunting. (This was my joke of the week.)
RATTLERS
It is that time of year again to watch where you are walking or stepping. A RATTLESNAKE was reported on the vicinity of Front St. and 22nd in the alley. It was run over. (I asked if they saved the rattles and the answer was “no way.”
The second report was given to me by Police Chief John Turner. The snake was on the Levee Walking Trail near the Old Bridge. The spotter did call 911 immediately and help was there within a minute. Always call 911 and call no matter what kind of snake it is.
AMERICAN FLAGS
I met a couple in Lehman’s True Value last week and they were buying a new flag. They were retiring their old flag. I have always given my old flags to Larry Bower at the First Security Bank for retirement. If that is not convenient for you, give it to a Boy Scout, an American Legion member, or VFW member. They are sure to get it to the right location.
Did you get your flag up on Tuesday? I will have counted them that evening. I know there are people that only fly their flags on holidays but they can be flown year round. At this time in our countries history, a support of our love of country can be shown by flying our awesome American Flag. I am so lucky that I was born, raised, and am still living in the best country in the world. I cannot imagine what it would be like to have to abandon my home and this wonderful Fort Benton because some radicals were trying to take it.
KEN’S WWI STORIES
I really enjoyed Ken Robison’s WWI stories in the last the 14th and 21st editions of the River Press. He wrote about women who changed the world with their actions like the Red Cross. Nurses are the backbone of any clinic or hospital.
I enjoy watching them put all your information into a computer. It is all at the tip of their fingers and tells all you want to know about yourself. Well, almost everything. (If you have a secret life, you would not tell anyone because once you do tell someone, it is no longer a secret. (I have been watching too many 48 hour shows on TV.)
THE HAZENS
I phoned Judy and Herb a couple of weeks ago to ask how they were doing. Many of you readers were asking me if I had heard from them since they moved.
They are doing fine and enjoy their new place as much as I am enjoying living in their apartment at the Sunset Apartments. They live a ways out of town and it is peaceful and quiet. They said to say hello to everyone and they would be back to visit Fort Benton soon.
Well, today, Monday the 3rd, I called them again to ask Herb where the WI-FI box was located. Herb was in a kind of hurry to get to the hospital. Judy was taken there last night to the ER and was being operated on at that very moment for gall stones.
I thought it would be wonderful to send Judy a get-well card. At this moment I cannot put her address in this column but call me if you would like to have it.
GOD BLESS AMERICA, OUR TROOPS, THOSE WHO PROTECT US and WEAR RED ON FRIDAYS. (I’ll only be really happy when I see American Flags handing from every porch and everyone in red on Fridays. You would not disappoint me, would you?)

MARCH
I always remember as a child in school to ‘Beware of the Ides of March.” I was always afraid of March 15th and I did not learn until later what it was all about. Although nothing horrendous has happened to me on the 15th, it did to Julius Caesar. He actually set up the Julian calendar and the 15th as the Ides not knowing that he would be killed on that day in 1798.
I checked the dictionary for the meaning of Ides and only found that Caesar made the 15th of March, May, July and October the Ides. The other months are on the 13th. BUT, what are Ides? I did some research and asked a few people who are smarter than a 5th grader and no one knows. It is like our Fort Benton High School song that says we will profit by your creed. Who remembers what the creed is?
For me, it cannot possibly mean anything, or should it? I am not superstitious but all I know is that on the 15th I am extra careful in everything I do as the ides might get me. (That is my joke of the week.)
As the temperature warms and the ground begins to thaw, earth worm’s casts begin to appear heralding the return of the robin. (Our robin appearance in the middle of February here in Fort Benton hopefully means an early spring.) The name of the Full Crow Moon comes from the sawing of the crows signaling the end of winter. (Now as I wait to hear from the readers of the View about the return of the meadowlark, I also would like to hear about the first sounds of the cawing of a crow.)
It is also called the Full Crust Moon because snow melt crusts during the day and freezes at night.
Another name is the Full Tapping Moon and is the time to tap maple trees for syrup. The final name alerted the settlers to the last full moon of winter and was called the Full Lenten Moon. (Take your pick but I like the Full Tapping Moon best and I am sure those pancakes do too.)
The full moon this month is on Sunday the 12th. Enjoy the Full Lenten Moon as it is the last full moon of winter.
ROBINS
I am backing up to the time I wrote about the first robin sighting. I also received a call about a sighting but the connection of phones was not good and I could not hear the name or phone number. Would that person, if they read this, please call me again? I would like to give you some credit too for what it is worth in the View.
THE TRIBUNE
Hey Jackie Campbell! Did you see your name in the Great Falls Tribune on Tuesday the 21st, in the Montana section “Across the Big Sky. They, whoever they is, referred to me as a journalist for the River Press. I have been called by that title several times and I am kind of getting used to it. It is better than a lot of other things I have been called. (This is my second joke of the week.)
THRILL OF THE WEEK
The Regional Basketball Tournaments last week were nail biting, blood pressure upheaval, and nerve racking events. Talk about excitement and down to the last few seconds of play and it will keep us enjoying the memories for weeks.
Our Girls did a fantastic job of it especially the win over Box Elder on Thursday afternoon. I really should not single out that game because all their games were AWESOME. I have been watching the Longhorns and Lady Longhorns for 23 years now and the excitement grows. I also hear from “Old Timers” about games years ago that have never been forgotten.
Just a little private side note that I want to mention. My grandson, Grayson Bonilla, moved to Helena when he was in the 2nd grade. There are 5 freshman girls on the team and 4 of those were his classmates when he went to Fort Benton Elementary. I cannot believe that they are 15 years old now. Another shocker is they they are or already have started DRIVING LESSONS.
Another shocker for me is the fact that when Grayson turns 16, he will own a car. Some of you will remember that story but for those of you who do not, here it is.
A fund raiser was held for his Mom, Audra Bonilla, and Grandpa Bonilla donated his ’53 Buick that Grayson called “The Watermelon.” It went from a raffle ticket to a man who was visiting from Germany. He gave it to the friend he was visiting to put in his Antique Car Shop in Rudyard for restoring and safe keeping until Grayson turned 16. It will be too late for this year’s Summer Celebration Parade but I expect it to be in next year. (He should be a really good driver by then. I may even want to ride with him. (That is my 3rd joke of the week.)
LAUGHTER
I attended the last Cancer Support Group meeting at the Club House a couple of weeks ago. I was told that there would be lots of laughter because one of the members was going to entertain us with jokes. Not only did she tell us man jokes but she gave each of us a joke to read. It was great fun and spending an evening with all of these cancer survivors was a blessing for me. They are the bravest men and woman I have ever known. They are always smiling, laughing, and appreciate everything around them and their lives. If you are down, depressed, and unhappy you should spend a day with one of them. I know that you will never complain again.
Please support your Chouteau County Cancer Support Group. It is an organization that does everything for cancer patients. They are non-profit and raise all their own funds. ll of the new patients are given a handmade quilt made by the busy fingers of the Quilting Guild or women who just make them because they love to do it. Thank goodness we have people like that in our community.
PONDERISMS
“Why does a round pizza come in a square box?”
AMERICAN FLAGS
Now you only have 3 months left to get your American Flag and hang it. Just do it!
I know that I am a nag about this subject but I feel strongly about it. A friend took me to lunch last week on a beautiful day that was warm and the sun was shining. We cruised all the streets of Fort Benton and I saw only 1 GREEN LIGHT BULB in a porch light. The green bulbs are a show of support for our Troops. It is also a sign of your patriotism which is a sign of love of your country. I am absolutely positive that you all love our county so display it. Just do it!
