JULY MOON
How quickly these months are rolling around. The Full Buck Moon is usually the month when the antlers of the buck deer push out of foreheads in coatings of velvety fur. It was also called the Full Thunder Moon for the reason that thunder storms are most frequent during this month. Another name is the Full Hay Moon. (I really enjoy the different names of each month and the significance of them. These names are hundreds of years old mostly named by the Native Americans.
4TH OF JULY
This is my favorite holiday. I love what it stands for. I love the flags waving almost everywhere. I love fireworks. It just seems like a most happy birthday party. I will count my blessings the whole day. I could have been born in another country that was not the home of the brave and the free. I feel I can say what I feel, especially at my age,) and not be concerned about it. Yes, God bless America.
TRIATHLON
On Saturday, July 7th there will be another exciting event. The Missouri River Breaks will sponsor the event which starts and ends in Fort Benton. It begins at 8:00 a.m. The starting point in Fort Benton is a canoe/kayak 20mile race, then on to a 3.4 run, and a grand finish in Fort Benton with a 20mile bicycle ride. I do not know where the beginning and finish lines are. There is a map on the poster, but I cannot make out the beginning and end with my eyesight. Check it out for yourself.
At 2:00 p.m. there will be outdoor games and the pool will be open. I do not know details on the games but I think that they are for the kiddos. It should be a fun day for them.
At 5:00 p.m. on Front Street there will be a FREE CONCERT called Boats, Brews, and Blues. In my opinion this event is going to attract a crowd so get there early and stay late. Let us have the good weather hold as it did for Summer Celebration
JUNIOR EXPLORERS
Every Tuesday and Thursday at the Chouteau County Library & the BLM Interpretive Center there will be a Junior Explorers Series.
Please check the River Press for the time and place. It is different every week.
This sounds like another great program to keep kiddos occupied this summer. I wish I was a kid again when I hear about programs like these. (I wonder if I could sneak in?)
VIRGELLE
For those of you readers who are antique buffs Virgelle will hold an outdoor flea market. The date is Sunday July 8th from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. If you have never been to Virgelle you will find a very charming area that you will return to many times with visitors. It is worth the trip and take a ride across the Missouri if the ferry is running.
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS
Wear red on Fridays such as a Support Our Troops t-shirt. Again I would like to see those red shirts with the logo “Support out Troops” on it.
Several years ago over 350 of those shirts were sold. Where could all those shirts have disappeared? Please check your closets and let next Friday be a red shirt Support Our Troops day and every Friday. Let it continue through the summer while we are wearing short sleeved shirts.
If you did not get a shirt or it is too small or too large, check out the Sadie’s Resale Chop for one.
FREE GOLF LESSONS
Lessons begin on July 11th, 12th, 18th, and 19th for different age groups. Check River Press for times.
SUMMER READING PROGRAM
I really enjoy the Summer Reading program seeing the Kiddos on the lawn of the Library / How I wish we would have had those kinds of programs when I was a kid. I spent a lot of time in the library but it was not outdoors. It was on a main street with nothing but cement in front.
Our Chouteau County Free Library is one of the reasons I love Fort Benton. Because I have poor vision I no longer read. I belong to Talking Books but note that the Library has hundreds of books on tape.
Take advantage of that Folks and listen to great books on vacations or times when you spent long hours driving. May I suggest books about Montana. They are a wealth of information.
INVITATION
Come to the Sunrise Bluffs for Sunday dinner. Since the Senior Center does not serve Saturday or Sunday dinners any longer, the Bluffs would be an alternative for a pleasant Sunday afternoon.
Dinner is served at 1:00 p.m. and it is necessary to make a reservation. Call Karla at 622-5443 during the week.
It is a great social afternoon to meet more of your Fort Benton neighbors. There may be old friends who have moved to the Bluffs and they would like to visit with you. (We are actually at the other end of town and it would be a little further a drive. I am accused of moving out in the country when I moved to the Sunset apartments.)
Hope to see you next Sunday.
CONSTRUCTION
I was able to track down some information about the construction on Front Street on the north end of town. Perhaps you did not even know that Front Street jags over a half block after it dead ends into the Sunrise Bluffs. It is s government mandate that sewers be brought up to code. Most rural areas are old and falling apart as most senior citizens are.
I do not know where the construction company began but they worked between 23rd and 22nd for several weeks. They have now moved on to the area between 22nd and 21st.
So where do you go now since your destination is the pump house across from the Old Fort Benton Fort?
The only way to go is diagonally across the Old Fort Park to Front Street. The bad news is that it will be confusion for a while but the good news is that Front Street between the Sunrise Bluffs and the swimming pool will come out of it a well, no bumps, potholes, road traveled. That stretch of road is not well defined between gravel parking area and the road. I am looking forward to the improvement although I no longer drive.
GOD BLESS AMERICA, OUR TROOPS, POLICE OFFIS, FIREMEN/WOMEN AND EMT’s.

SUPPORT OUR TROOPS
Go through your closet and find your “Support Our Troops” red shirt. Now that we have been blessed with warmer weather, you can wear your short sleeved shirt that is red on Fridays. I know that the shirts are out there somewhere because we sold over 300 of them a few years ago. Next Friday on Jimmy Buffet Day I expect to see a sea of red Support shirts. Please make an effort to find and wear them. It is so important, especially today when we are unsure from day to day what is going to happen. God bless America.
JIMMY BUFFET DAY
It has rolled around again. Chris and Teri Halko invite each and every one of you to help socialate Jimmy Buffet Day. It is a very sociable event. Come and enjoy the mock drinks and the Mexican snacks. Perhaps there will even be some dancing to the song “Margaritaville.” Wouldn’t that be fun to watch? So come on down and meet your friends and neighbors that you may not have seen all that long, cold winter and most of spring. See you there.
KILLDEER
It is Saturday and I just checked on Mama Killdeer and her nest in my driveway. She is gone. It was very entertaining since Memorial Day watching her. I did not check on her for the rainy days on Thursday and Friday. I wonder if she took her eggs to a drier area. If anyone knows about bird’s habits, please let me know. I’m in the phone book.
ARE YOU WONDERING?
Yes, I am wondering about several goings on. There are others of you that also ask me questions and believe me I am the last to know anything.
However, I did check on the Old Rectory and it is on its foundation but the supports have not been removed. It is a waiting game, like everything else, as to when the contractors will return to finish the job.
Construction work at 22nd and Front St. was started about 6 weeks ago and continued for 2 days. I got two stories about what is being done but I could never explain what they are. I did find out that the job should be finished next week. It does not affect me at all but the families living on Front St. have to take a different route home.
The Old Depot was noticed by all who went to the cemetery on Memorial Day. I had at least a half dozen calls as to what the orange snow fence was doing around the Old Depot. All I could find out was that it was placed there by the railroad. I started a petition about a year and a half ago to have the Old Depot torn down. I was then advised that there was a group who wanted to restore it. (I really did not know where I was going to raise the money for the project.) This was a relief to me because I have been trying for 5 years to get some assistance in doing something with the property. The property is unslightly, dangerous, contaminated and it is not the original depot. The original depot burned. Due to the complications in dealing with “those in the know” nothing has progressed.
JUNE MOON
The Full Strawberry Moon is named because of the short month of the harvesting of strawberries. It is also known as the Full Red Moon because as the Moon rises it appears reddish. Watch for that this month.
Another name is the Full Green Moon but there was no explanation. Perhaps it was because everything such as leaves and grass are all a beautiful green.
The full moon is on Wednesday the 28th.
SO PROUD
To all our Fort Benton Sport Teams who came in on top or close, we are so proud of you. But not only the top teams but all of the youngsters who participate in sports be honored. You put in a lot of effort and time doing something you love and it is obvious that you are also #1 to all of us seniors. You bring back so many memories of winnings and losings in past years. Now our grandchildren and great grandchildren are playing all the sports games. Always remember to keep up the good work and the best thing is that you try. We love all of you.
CULBERTSON HOUSE
Yes, it is a go on the new second floor balcony that will extend almost to the street. It seems that it was not done correctly when the building was renovated and will now be updated to code. It will be a beautiful addition to Front St. It will take time as the plans are just in the beginning stages. GO Wake Cup Coffee Shoppe.
SUMMER CELEBRATION
It is only about 2 weeks until the fun days begin. I have only heard a couple of events that will take (or not take) place. There will not be a Pot-Luck on Friday evening. However, there will be food venders in the Park before the Pie Auction. No one will go hungry.
A new event this year will be “Fort Benton Has Talent.” It will be held in the Old Fort Park at 1:00 in the afternoon. I am sure you are all going to be first in line to sign up for this exciting program. I know that there are some very talented youngsters and oldsters that will fill our afternoon with song and dance. So sign up and get over to the Old Fort Park at 1:00 p.m. to make your choice. See you there.
A PERSONAL NOTE
I have to tell you that I am visually and hearing impaired. When you see me and say hello, I am not ignoring you. I just did not hear you nor see you. Please understand and know that I appreciate your patience and consideration. . Up close and personal is the only way I can identify who you are. I feel that I have not been able to be as observant as I once was. But then nothing is like it once was.
I share my problem with 20 million other Americans. I am very fortunate that I have so many loving and caring family and friends. Perhaps I should not say “I’ll see you there” any more. I’ll be there but I do not know if I will see you. Love all of you so much.
GOD BLESS AMERICA (LAND THAT I LOVE,) OUR TROOPS, POLICE OFFICERS, FIREMEN/WOMEN, AND EMT’s. WEAR RED ON FRIDAYS, HANG YOUR FLAGS OUT EACH MORNING (UNLESS YOU HAVE A LIGHT ON IT,) AND KEEP A GREEN BULB IN YOUR PORCH LIGHT.

MERRY CHRISTMAS
I wish you a very happy Christmas Day. It is all about family and be sure that they all know how much you love them. You never know that it may be an important time in their lives that they should know that.
For those of you who will not be with family, make a few phone calls and catch up with what your family and friends are doing. Time flies so quickly that I didn’t realize that I had not talked to cousins and friends for a year. That is way too long a time. (I’ll make it a New Year’s resolution to call them every month.)
In a few days it will be all over except paying the Visa bills. What will be the next event that will take over the TV advertising? Could it possibly be stories about people who do good deeds and are kind?
CABIN FEVER
Have you got it or were you able to get out last week to do anything? Not me. The cold ruined my whole social calendar. I missed both Christmas Concerts last week because I didn’t want to go out in the cold. I thought about those cute little K to 4th graders who had to go out. The High School students seem to adjust well to the cold as I have seen some of them with shorts on.
On Thursday, Bingo at the Senior Center was canceled. I went somewhere and although I covered my windshield I did not plug the truck in. The truck refused to start Friday morning and besides I had some kind of a bug that kept me down for three (3) days.
I missed Wreaths Across America on Saturday. Diane Jones had called me and said she did not want me to go to the cemetery because it was too cold but that I could attend the program at the Sunrise Bluffs at 11:00 a.m. I couldn’t manage that either and I wanted to hear the essays that the students wrote. This was something new for the essay reading because the last couple of years they were read at the cemetery and it was difficult to hear them.
I have something to do every day this week and I think that will take care of the cabin fever. The temperature will be in the 30”s and that is fine with me.
Another cheery thing is that the days begin getting longer on the Tuesday the 20th. On checking a calendar on the internet, I saw that the 20th was 1 minute longer than the day before. By New Year’s Eve the day will be 8 minutes longer. Now, doesn’t that make your day?
WEATHER CHANNEL
With all this cold weather I have been watching the Weather Channel for temperatures and possible snow warnings. I first check the Fort Benton site, thanks to John Good Agency, and then the national weather station on TV.
I have seen some great snows about odd weather happenings. What I found so interesting were the pictures that people took, for instance, of odd cloud formations. They all have names and some are seldom seen. If you remember a few months back I told you about a man here in town that saw an upside down rainbow. He did not get a picture of it. So, if you see something unusual in the sky, take a picture of it and turn it in to the weather channel that you watch on TV. It may be a once in a lifetime picture. I do not have a smart phone or a great camera that I can take pictures with but I would like to see someone else do it. It may end up on s National TV Weather Station.
BELL RINGERS
Weren’t the newly formed Bell Ringers a joy to listen to at the Christmas Concert a few weeks ago? They will be playing at the Christmas Eve service at the Methodist Church and everyone is invited to attend. Check your River Press for the time. That should make for a wonderful evening of Christmas spirit. Thank you Choir for your time practicing and performing for the community. You are all Angels.
GOD BLESS AMERICA
We need these blessing more than ever now. May we soon have peace on earth?
GOD BLESS OUR TROOPS
How brave these men and women are. They are willing to sacrifice their lives to protect their country. Would you be willing to do that?
GOD BLESS THOSE WHO PROTECT US
Yes, I know that there are good and bad in everything. We lose too many good officers that are being killed of duty. I have strong feelings for their families. What must it be like to have your loved one leave for work and never come home again? Yes, I know that could happen with any family but an officer has committed his life to protecting us. They need all the blessings they can get.
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS
Frankly, I do not see much support for our troops in Fort Benton. I do not see many of the 300 Support Our Troops t-shirts worn on Fridays. I do not see many American Flags hanging on homes nor do I see green lights on porches.
If you think that I am scolding you here, I am. You are all basically comfortable. You do not have bombs blowing up around you perhaps destroying you home. You do not have to leave your home and travel to God knows where. You have plenty of food and water. You are warm and sit in front of your TV in the evening and watch the war. Doesn’t it mean anything to you? Do you ever think about those beautiful young men and women who are dying every day? Have you ever been in the Service of our Country? Have you ever had someone close to you that were in the Service or are now in the Service? Just think about it and get out and do something to support our Troops.

PIE DAY
There will be no Pie Day in December. On the 2nd Friday of the month, that will be the 9th, there will be a COOKIE WALK. I have enjoyed these Walks the past few years as I do not bake a lot anymore. If I remember correctly, I bought 5 dozen cookies and I had cookies a day for 2 months. It was a light and wonderful dessert after dinner with my cup of tea. So you can see why I am looking forward to the Cookie Walk.
It begins at 10:00 a.m. and goes until the cookies are gone. See you there and I will remind you again.
CALENDAR
Don’t you keep a calendar? I do but my problem is that I forget to look at it. I have been doing better and have been calling friends to remind them of events. In the last few months I have heard, “I forgot about it,” and “I didn’t know about it.” I have used those excuses in the past and the problem is that you and I are missing out on a lot of events.
The River Press puts out every week a Community Calendar and that is the first thing I look at and mark my calendar. It is a great help and my only problem with that is when 2 or 3 events are on the same night or day. I do not like having to pick and choose.
Last Friday was an interesting day. I was at the Old Bridge at 11:00 a.m. for the Wreath throwing into the Missouri and the Salute to the Veterans. It was an absolutely beautiful day and the nicest one we have ever had for the 11/11 at 11:00 a.m.
Ron LaMont had the honor of throwing the wreath into the water. The wreath also had attached the note that if anyone finds it, to call the River Press. The Press received one phone call last June that the wreath had been found 6 miles downstream. The finders threw the wreath back into the water and it was never heard from again. I hope that we have better luck this time.
ORGANIZATIONS
There are so many worthy organizations in Fort Benton. They all do non-profit and charitable work. Please read about them in the River Press and decide which one is the most suited to your life style. I am absolutely sure that there is hidden talent out there and could be used to advantage to some organization.
Please consider taking on some sort of project during the long, cold winter days to come. Don’t let cabin fever get the best of you. Join some group after reading this reminder. I assure you that it will make your life a lot more meaningful if you give of yourself.
CHOUTEAU COUNTY COUNTRY CHRISTMAS
It is only 3 weeks from Saturday so put it on your calendar. The volunteers who put this show on have been working for weeks to gather vendors, including food, and entertainment.
Please support these events and invite all your family and friends to attend with you. Let’s make this one of the best Christmas events ever. See you there.
I have heard that there will be no Parade of Lights this year but the Tree lighting at the circle will be bigger and better. Read more about it in the next few weeks. (It is getting to be like the Hallmark movies.)
On Sunday will be the biggie, the Christmas Concert with local talent, a Choir, Bell Ringers, and of course Santa and his poem of the year. If this doesn’t give you the Christmas spirit of love and family, nothing will. See you there.
BASKETBALL
The season is about to start and it should be an exciting one. The youngsters are practicing and toning up their skills.
The first game is scheduled for Thursday November 17th. I know that the games will be well supported. See you there.
THE BIG MOVE
Yes, it is true. I moved from my beloved Morger House where I lived for 23 years. I now reside at the Sunset apartments.
It is quite a complete change from big to smaller, from many street lights to one on the far corner, from the middle of town to the north end, from paved road to a gravel road, and many other changes. My favorite thing is the view. I can see Signal Point and have a 180 degree view of the Bluffs. When the sun sets the Bluffs are golden and I stand by my kitchen window until the sight disappears. I really enjoy the setting sun.
I wonder how I could accumulate so much “stuff.” My advice here is down size now. You don’t need half of what you are living with and do not leave it for someone else to do.
I have what I think is a strange story. I lived in the house in Melvindale, Michigan that I was raised in for 23 years. I lived in Walled Lake, Michigan for 23 years and now have lived in the Morger house for 23 years. That, to me, is a strange story.
I have 4 bird feeders hanging but in 3 weeks do not yet have any visitors. A friend told me it was because of the warm weather and the birds could fend for themselves. She said when it gets cold I should have lots of enjoyment watching them fly in and out. I can hardly wait. I am looking forward to seeing if there will be different species of birds at this end of town.
NOVEMBER MOON
I would like to have known this fact last week when I wrote about the November Moon. I hope that you heard enough about it on the news casts and weather reports that you were able to catch the full moon on the Monday the 14th. It was closest to the earth since 1948 and 30% brighter. It should still be large and bright by the time you get your edition of the River Press.
My hope is that on Monday evening it is not overcast. Happy mooning and not the kind you may be familiar with. (My joke of the week.)
VETERANS DAY DINNER
It was a different format this year at the Veterans Day dinner held at the Ag Center on last Friday evening 11/11. There was no planned program but we had conversation during dinner. It was very enjoyable for me, with my hearing aids, to have the 7 other people at my table to converse one at a time. We heard some wonderful stories and I didn’t have to strain to hear.
I enjoyed the company of Marge, Randy, Joe, Bob, Vi, and her husband. We were served a great dinner of roasted, ham, mashed potatoes with gravy, and corn. There was also water and lemonade on the nicely set tables. There was a large cake for dessert with the creamy frosting that I love. Pitchers were being filled constantly and coffee cups.
It was a very pleasant evening and was an evening much like the Tuesday night dinners once a month at the Golden Age Senior Center. I arrive there at 4:50 p.m. and I am home by 6:15 p.m. That is my big night out during the month.
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS
I mentioned this program many months ago when I saw it on TV. You would purchase green light bulbs and put it in your porch light. On TV it showed an entire neighborhood with green lights on their porches.
I purchased 2 light bulbs and 2 floodlights. The light bulbs burned out quite quickly and the floodlights are still lighting up when someone walked up because they are security lights.
Now advertised are light bulbs that are half white and half green. I think those will service better because the total green lights were too dark.
I heard this story about the green bulbs. On the Music Awards, on TV, the program has expanded. I do not watch that show but a friend, who has nothing to do with the Military, went out and bought a bulb.
I haven’t put my new light bulb in yet because no one wants to see me up on a ladder. If you would like to stop in for coffee and cinnamon toast, you would be welcome to put the bulb in for me. (Just joking!)
So get to your True Value and get your “Support the Troops,” green bulb. Just do it this time. I drove around town the last time and only saw about 3 or 4 green lights. I will be checking it out again along with the Christmas decorations in the next few weeks. (I think if it was said that Santa only stops a homes with green bulbs on the porch, it would be a more successful project.)
That is the least you can do to show your support. Our Troops deserve all the support we can give them. They are putting up their lives for us. We don’t want them to think we do not care or indifferent to what is going on.
We have nice warm beds, good and warm American food to eat, and do not have battles going on around us. If you do not agree with me then please let me know.
GOD BLESS AMERICA, OUR TROOPS, THOSE WHO PROTECT US and WEAR RED ON FRIDAYS.

PIE DAY
There will be no Pie Day in December.

BIG WEEKEND
The WOW FACTOR hits you when you read the schedule for this coming weekend. I hope that you hit all the great events that will be happening so close to home. Make a day of it from early morning to late in the evening. Walk Front Street and stop for treats and hot drinks at the stores. Have lunch with friends at Bridgeport Station while being entertained. Shop until you drop and follow the national trend of “BUY LOCAL.” Try your best to visit our Sister-Cities. And please, please attend the Christmas Tree lightening. Bring your children and grandchildren. Make it a tradition. There will be treats and lots of excitement when Santa arrives and the lights are turned on.
On Sunday is the best of all…the Christmas Concert. It is really going to be special with all of our local talent. Let’s fill the Elementary School auditorium to capacity and enjoy the treats at intermission. I can hardly wait.
Invite your family and friends that live out of town. I heard on the evening news tonight, (Sunday) that it is supposed to be up in the 50 degrees. Who could ask for anything more? See you there and let me know by wishing me a Merry Christmas.
THANKSGIVING
One of the happenings during the Thanksgiving week was the return of the birds to my feeders. I began filling them two weeks ago and it takes a while for the word to get around bird world. It only takes a couple of days for them to empty the 5 feeders. When I open my shade in the morning, it is a great feeling to see the yard full of birds. I do have two problems with this “free kitchen,” is that the deer came in and knocked the suet feeder to the ground and it opened up. They ate the entire contents. There were also cat tracks in the snow that led directly to under my deck. I truly feel compassion for that animal. How can it survive in the kind of weather we are having now?
Another exciting event that occurred last week was that a squirrel returned to my yard. It has been a couple of years since I had two fun-to-watch playmate squirrels in my yard. I had even given my squirrel feeder away, to a friend who lives at the north end of town. She had squirrels in her yard but the minute she put out the feeder, they disappeared.
I know that there is a 50% chance that you do not like squirrels, but we had many happy breakfast hours watching them frolic about the yard chasing each other. They also would climb in the lilac trees, outside the back window, jumping from branch to branch. They were having so much fun. Do you remember when Tim Burmeister took a photo of the two squirrels taking a bath in our bird bath? It was quite a while back. We found one in the leaf compost pile and have no idea what happened to it. The other one was around for a while and then it disappeared.
Back to the present day, I made a phone call and retrieved the feeder along with the peanuts and squirrel feed I had given away. I filled the feeder just as it began to snow and found today (Sunday,) that it was empty. It was a tad difficult to get to the feeders today because I had 6 inches of snow to plow through.
The bright side of the snow was the way the full moon lid up our deck. It was one of the most beautiful sights ever. I wish I had a picture of it but I have to happy with the memory.
50”s Home Schooled
I have run out of those bits of wisdom. There were some that were not printable. I will move on this week to another category.
OBSERVATIONS
Observed in a grocery store in the 6-Item express lane a customer was quietly fuming as a person slipped into the line ahead of the customer, pushing a cart piled high with groceries. Image the surprise and delight when the cashier beckoned the person to come forward and looked into the cart and asked sweetly, “So which 6 items would you like to buy? (Wouldn’t it be wonderful if that happened more often? Actually, we do not have to worry about that in Fort Benton. If I have just a few items in my basket, I am always sent to the front of the line. On the other hand, perhaps they think because I am old that I cannot stand in line any length of time.)
GERALDINE
I know more of what is going on in Geraldine because of the “Over the River to Geraldine” column by Robyn Scribner. I met Robyn several months ago. She is the Kindergarten teacher and took over writing the column every week. I have always envied teachers because they knew so many people. Robyn apparently knows everyone in Geraldine. It makes for very interesting reading. Keep up the great news. (My excuse is that Fort Benton is larger than Geraldine and I couldn’t possibly know everyone. When Randy Morger and I publish our book, “What Changes We Would Make as Co-Presidents,” the first item would be…Everyone would have to wear a name-tag when they are outside the home.”)
LIONS CLUB
The Lions Club also has a new reporter. Miriam Smith gave a great update on Lions Club projects. She just moved here from Bozeman and is already quickly into volunteering. I now know everything I ever wanted to know about The Lions. As stated so many times on all the pages in the River Press…every organization needs volunteers. Please make an effort to help out one of them.
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS
Have you installed your green porch light yet? You really need to do that. It doesn’t take much effort for a show of support. I cannot help but think about our Troops, thousands of miles away; when in a few weeks it will be Christmas. We Americans are so fortunate to have the protection that we have. Even with what we have there are great dangers. What would it be like if we didn’t have those Troops doing what they are doing?
GOD BLESS AMERICA, MONTANA, FORT BENTON, OUR TROOPS, WEAR RED ON FRIDAYS, and PUT A GREEN BULB ON YOUR FRONT PORCH LIGHT.

SUPPORT OUR TROOPS
A recent Support Our Troops program has begun to put a green bulb in your porch light socket. It is called “Operation Green Light.” If you see a green light on a porch or window there is a good reason. Green is the color or hope, renewal, and well-being.
I mentioned this program in the November 11th issue of View from the Bridge and just this past weekend looked for it on the inter-net. More than a million and a half homes already have green lights on their porches or in their windows. In Washington, D.C. there is a great showing of green lights in government office buildings as well as office buildings in New York City.
I installed the green bulbs on my front porch and side entry over the weekend. I also purchased green flood lights for my security fixture. So I am up and running to support our troops especially with what is happening in the world today. I have known nothing but war in my lifetime. My Christmas wish is that the youngsters of today will know only PEACE. Please make it your Christmas wish too. My Hallmark Christmas movies all tell that you do get a Christmas wish.
I spoke with Ed Lehman of True Value and he will order green bulbs. The cost is $2.98 and that is the least you can do to Support Our Troops. Call Ed at 622-5042 or pay a visit to the store to place an order. If you order in the next few days, he will have the order in the following Monday. Please participate in this program. It is a nation-wide program just as the wearing “Support Our Troops” t-shirts and wearing red on Fridays.
WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA
The Wreaths across America is also nation-wide and have you purchased a wreath yet? The actual program will take place on Saturday, December 12th at 10 am at Riverside Cemetery. Nancy Lachapelle is letting me put my wreath on my WWII Veteran Wally Morger’s grave. That will make my Christmas a little happier.
BUSY MONTH
Just as Santa is busy at the North Pole, everyone in Fort Benton is busy with community events and their own family events. Keep a sharp eye on the Community Calendar in the River Press and the Chouteau County Country Christmas flyer so you do not miss anything. I find conflict with two events at the same time but try your best to visit each of them. The Chouteau County Country Christmas, Bridgeport Station, the Christmas Tree Lighting, and events in our sister cities all are packed with the Christmas Spirit. They are all there for your convenience.
My biggest enjoyment is the entertainment. I love music and especially Christmas music. As you look over your CCCC program, you will not know where to go first. Be sure to invite your family and friends from out of town. It is a great time to get together to spend quality time at an easy pace.
One thing I would especially like you to attend is the Christmas tree lighting. It will be held on Saturday at 5:30 pm at the Circle. (I hope you all know where the Circle is?) I watch too many Hallmark movies and the town’s tree lighting is the biggest event in town. Last year was the first year of the tree lighting and as with all first events it did not go as planned. This year is a different story and I would like to see a huge crowd in attendance. Santa will be there and the most inviting thing will be the refreshments. Sounds like a Hallmark movie to me. I’ll see you here, there, and everywhere.
AFRAID OF THE DARK
I only have another month to wait until the days start getting longer. It actually will be another two months after that when we noticed the nights are shorter. I can hardly wait. These days of 16 hours of darkness are not helping my attitude. I just wish I could hibernate like the bears. The only problem with that is eating enough to sustain me until the middle of March. On the other hand, it might be enjoyable to eat anything (sweet) that I wanted to gain the weight. Oh, forget all that. It would be more trouble than it is worth. Where do I get these foolish notions? It’s those long, long, long, evenings.
STRAND ROOM
Thanks Bethany for the great coverage of the newly dedicated “Strand Room” formerly the Hornaday Buffalo Room. It made us aware of importance of our Museums and Fort Benton’s heritage. Fort Benton is the most important historical city in Montana and it is the best kept secret. Word of mouth is the best way to get this secret out so do your part in promoting our town.
LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE
On the cover of the October issue of this magazine was a photo of Lost Lake. There is also a story inside that tells some interesting facts about the area. Until I read that article, I thought that it was a volcano eruption. Who knew? The issues of this magazine are free and you can find them all over town. They usually have articles about local residents.
MOUNTAIN VIEW CO-OP
I receive a quarterly magazine from the Mt. View Co-Op. I have often said that I do not know what is going on in town and that I am the last to know.
In the fall issue of the magazine is an article about the Fertilizer Plant breaking ground in Fort Benton, MT. When I took some junk to the dumpster for Clean-Up weekend, I saw a man surveying the property. The magazine says that excavation and work will start before the snow flies. I made a phone call to verify the information and it may have to wait until next week before I find info.
TURKEY BINGO
I had a great time at the Club House last Saturday night playing, of all things, bingo for a turkey. I had a great time sitting at a table of eight friends. I won my turkey on the 10th game and after that three more people at the table won turkeys plus one person won some cash. I am not a die-hard bingo fan because the caller always calls numbers next to, in-between, and when I only have one number to go someone shouts BINGO. In spite of all that, it was a very enjoyable night out with a turkey to boot. Go VFW!
