JULY MOON
How quickly these months are rolling around. The Full Buck Moon is usually the month when the antlers of the buck deer push out of foreheads in coatings of velvety fur. It was also called the Full Thunder Moon for the reason that thunder storms are most frequent during this month. Another name is the Full Hay Moon. (I really enjoy the different names of each month and the significance of them. These names are hundreds of years old mostly named by the Native Americans.
4TH OF JULY
This is my favorite holiday. I love what it stands for. I love the flags waving almost everywhere. I love fireworks. It just seems like a most happy birthday party. I will count my blessings the whole day. I could have been born in another country that was not the home of the brave and the free. I feel I can say what I feel, especially at my age,) and not be concerned about it. Yes, God bless America.
TRIATHLON
On Saturday, July 7th there will be another exciting event. The Missouri River Breaks will sponsor the event which starts and ends in Fort Benton. It begins at 8:00 a.m. The starting point in Fort Benton is a canoe/kayak 20mile race, then on to a 3.4 run, and a grand finish in Fort Benton with a 20mile bicycle ride. I do not know where the beginning and finish lines are. There is a map on the poster, but I cannot make out the beginning and end with my eyesight. Check it out for yourself.
At 2:00 p.m. there will be outdoor games and the pool will be open. I do not know details on the games but I think that they are for the kiddos. It should be a fun day for them.
At 5:00 p.m. on Front Street there will be a FREE CONCERT called Boats, Brews, and Blues. In my opinion this event is going to attract a crowd so get there early and stay late. Let us have the good weather hold as it did for Summer Celebration
JUNIOR EXPLORERS
Every Tuesday and Thursday at the Chouteau County Library & the BLM Interpretive Center there will be a Junior Explorers Series.
Please check the River Press for the time and place. It is different every week.
This sounds like another great program to keep kiddos occupied this summer. I wish I was a kid again when I hear about programs like these. (I wonder if I could sneak in?)
VIRGELLE
For those of you readers who are antique buffs Virgelle will hold an outdoor flea market. The date is Sunday July 8th from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. If you have never been to Virgelle you will find a very charming area that you will return to many times with visitors. It is worth the trip and take a ride across the Missouri if the ferry is running.
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS
Wear red on Fridays such as a Support Our Troops t-shirt. Again I would like to see those red shirts with the logo “Support out Troops” on it.
Several years ago over 350 of those shirts were sold. Where could all those shirts have disappeared? Please check your closets and let next Friday be a red shirt Support Our Troops day and every Friday. Let it continue through the summer while we are wearing short sleeved shirts.

FREE GOLF LESSONS
Lessons begin on July 11th, 12th, 18th, and 19th for different age groups. Check River Press for times.
SUMMER READING PROGRAM
I really enjoy the Summer Reading program seeing the Kiddos on the lawn of the Library / How I wish we would have had those kinds of programs when I was a kid. I spent a lot of time in the library but it was not outdoors. It was on a main street with nothing but cement in front.
Our Chouteau County Free Library is one of the reasons I love Fort Benton. Because I have poor vision I no longer read. I belong to Talking Books but note that the Library has hundreds of books on tape.
Take advantage of that Folks and listen to great books on vacations or times when you spent long hours driving. May I suggest books about Montana. They are a wealth of information.
INVITATION
Come to the Sunrise Bluffs for Sunday dinner. Since the Senior Center does not serve Saturday or Sunday dinners any longer, the Bluffs would be an alternative for a pleasant Sunday afternoon.
Dinner is served at 1:00 p.m. and it is necessary to make a reservation. Call Karla at 622-5443 during the week.
It is a great social afternoon to meet more of your Fort Benton neighbors. There may be old friends who have moved to the Bluffs and they would like to visit with you. (We are actually at the other end of town and it would be a little further a drive. I am accused of moving out in the country when I moved to the Sunset apartments.)

CONSTRUCTION
I was able to track down some information about the construction on Front Street on the north end of town. Perhaps you did not even know that Front Street jags over a half block after it dead ends into the Sunrise Bluffs. It is s government mandate that sewers be brought up to code. Most rural areas are old and falling apart as most senior citizens are.
I do not know where the construction company began but they worked between 23rd and 22nd for several weeks. They have now moved on to the area between 22nd and 21st.
So where do you go now since your destination is the pump house across from the Old Fort Benton Fort?
The only way to go is diagonally across the Old Fort Park to Front Street. The bad news is that it will be confusion for a while but the good news is that Front Street between the Sunrise Bluffs and the swimming pool will come out of it a well, no bumps, potholes, road traveled. That stretch of road is not well defined between gravel parking area and the road. I am looking forward to the improvement although I no longer drive.

FIREWORKS
Did you wonder why when there were a few minutes of darkness in the display? Someone told us that there was a boat in the river that held up the show. What really happened was that the computer failed and the rest of the show had to be manually done.
Did you know that fireworks were handled by a computer? I am so far behind in all this tech stuff. The only thing I would like to have is the vacuum that runs all by its self. What a blast that would be. Again I wonder if you still have to clean the dirt out of it.
JULY MOON
If you readers are tired of or do not read about the moons, please let me know. I have been repeating the same moon names for years now. I still enjoy it because I cannot retain the names and it is new information to me each year. I do enjoy knowing when the full moon will appear and when the finger nail moon first appears.
The July moon is called the Full Buck Moon. The antlers on the bucks begin to grow. It is also called the Thunder Moon which took place today (Sunday the 2nd.) It was 94 degrees according to my weather station. When I came to my computer room to work on the View, I keep the blind closed because the light shines into my screen. An hour later I went to the kitchen and found it very dark and raining. Then there was a loud clap of thunder with lightening to follow. It was raining too hard for me to go out and retrieve my flag.
A short time later the weather station read 86 degrees and the sun came out. I checked the flag and it was perfectly dry. It is no use to predict the weather. If you wait 5 minutes, it will change.
My husband Wally and I used to have a contest about who would see that finger nail moon first. Of course I always won just like I won the best rock-of-the-day when we went hunting. (This was my joke of the week.)
RATTLERS
It is that time of year again to watch where you are walking or stepping. A RATTLESNAKE was reported on the vicinity of Front St. and 22nd in the alley. It was run over. (I asked if they saved the rattles and the answer was “no way.”
The second report was given to me by Police Chief John Turner. The snake was on the Levee Walking Trail near the Old Bridge. The spotter did call 911 immediately and help was there within a minute. Always call 911 and call no matter what kind of snake it is.
AMERICAN FLAGS
I met a couple in Lehman’s True Value last week and they were buying a new flag. They were retiring their old flag. I have always given my old flags to Larry Bower at the First Security Bank for retirement. If that is not convenient for you, give it to a Boy Scout, an American Legion member, or VFW member. They are sure to get it to the right location.
Did you get your flag up on Tuesday? I will have counted them that evening. I know there are people that only fly their flags on holidays but they can be flown year round. At this time in our countries history, a support of our love of country can be shown by flying our awesome American Flag. I am so lucky that I was born, raised, and am still living in the best country in the world. I cannot imagine what it would be like to have to abandon my home and this wonderful Fort Benton because some radicals were trying to take it.
KEN’S WWI STORIES
I really enjoyed Ken Robison’s WWI stories in the last the 14th and 21st editions of the River Press. He wrote about women who changed the world with their actions like the Red Cross. Nurses are the backbone of any clinic or hospital.
I enjoy watching them put all your information into a computer. It is all at the tip of their fingers and tells all you want to know about yourself. Well, almost everything. (If you have a secret life, you would not tell anyone because once you do tell someone, it is no longer a secret. (I have been watching too many 48 hour shows on TV.)
THE HAZENS
I phoned Judy and Herb a couple of weeks ago to ask how they were doing. Many of you readers were asking me if I had heard from them since they moved.
They are doing fine and enjoy their new place as much as I am enjoying living in their apartment at the Sunset Apartments. They live a ways out of town and it is peaceful and quiet. They said to say hello to everyone and they would be back to visit Fort Benton soon.
Well, today, Monday the 3rd, I called them again to ask Herb where the WI-FI box was located. Herb was in a kind of hurry to get to the hospital. Judy was taken there last night to the ER and was being operated on at that very moment for gall stones.
I thought it would be wonderful to send Judy a get-well card. At this moment I cannot put her address in this column but call me if you would like to have it.
GOD BLESS AMERICA, OUR TROOPS, THOSE WHO PROTECT US and WEAR RED ON FRIDAYS. (I’ll only be really happy when I see American Flags handing from every porch and everyone in red on Fridays. You would not disappoint me, would you?)

OLD BRIDGE
My loved Old Bridge lost its arch last week. I know the story and pictures will be covered by Editor Tim or Reporter Bethany. I just wanted to tell you readers about my love for that Old Bridge. I am at this time doing a research project on obtaining a new National Historic sign for the Old Bridge that has been missing for years. (Actually, Hank Armstrong has been the leading force with this project. His know-it-all about Fort Benton did more than I have done. (There will be more about this story in weeks to come when a new sign will arrive.)
The point of this story is that it broke my heart that anything has happened to that Old Bridge. It is my favorite historic structure in town and I said so in one of my Views from the Bridge. At that time, Bob Doerk was still with us and he asked me why I named the Old Bridge instead of the Old Fort.
We all have our favorites and the Old Bridge happens to mean more to me. I am not listing the historical structures because I love them all but the Old Bridge has a special place in my heart because of my hobby in Michigan of seeking Covered Bridges whenever I traveled around the country. There is only 1 Covered Bridge in Montana and so I turned to old steel bridges.
The Old Bridge’s history is so unique and if you are a history buff, you will understand where I am coming from.
BRONZES
Have you walked the Levee Trail lately or ridden your bike? Next time take notice of the Lewis and Clark, The Cowboy, Thomas Meagher, and Shep bronzes. They have been oiled and look enhanced. I appreciate the Community Improvement Association (CIA,) for the cost of the project.
Kudos’ to Randy Morger and Kirby Koon of the River and Plains Society for the cleaning of the John Mullen statue. The discoloration was caused by the hard water of the Fort Benton sprinkling system. The same thing is happening to the Memorial Benches and Tables but in those cases, I think that it makes them more attractive. I like the patterns that the sprinkling has produced... I like the Levee Trail “lookin’ good” because it is one of the Visitors high priority “things to do in Fort Benton.”
PET’S AND PALS
In the June 17th issue of the River Press, there was a very informative article Pets ‘n’ Pals by Gayle Irwin. It was titled, “Pet responsibility affects communities.” She said there are 60% of American families that own pets. She emphasizes the care of pets as to water, food, and exercise. If you missed it I hope you still have a copy.
If you walk your dog along the Levee Trail, please use the Doggie Bags to clean up after them. It has been noted that our Visitors are excellent at using the bags than are our residents. If you see someone neglecting the cleanup, please remind them of their obligation.
DEDMAN FOUNDATION
On July 17th and 18th the Dedman Foundation is offering no cost spay/neuter for your cats and dogs. Take advantage of this opportunity to limit kittens and puppies that results in more kittens and puppies.
I have heard that the plan is to trap the overrun of feral cats. I had one living under my deck for two years but disappeared this winter. Now I have another one and I wish I could interest someone to trap it for me. I feel so sorry for it although I think it seems well fed. Another problem for me is that the birds disappear from my yard. They seem to have some sort of signal and alert all their friends not to visit my yard when the cats are around.

The first was on July 1st and I hope you did not miss it. The second is July 31st. Enjoy the sight. It is also called the Full Thunder Moon because it is the month that thunder storms are most frequent. Another name is the Full Hay Moon and that surely applies this year to Montana.
SUMMER CELEBRATION
I asked around town and very few people had ever said thank you to Connie Jenkins for her 23 years of volunteering countless hours to make a fun time for Fort Benton and the many Visitors that come to town for the festivities. All the questioned people said they always meant to say think you but never got around to it.
I worked with Connie for 6 years doing the Parade. I loved doing it but could not continue. Six years was by far enough. Connie promised that when I quit, she would also quit. She did not and that was many years ago.
I know for certain that there is no one in Fort Benton who could take her place. If there is…please come forward. All those years were without compensation, nothing but a headache, and aggravation as far as I am concerned.
So at last a letter to the editor last week opened up some insight to what Connie has gone through. She took her assaults without whimpering but kept on plotting along with what she thought was the best thing to do for Fort Benton.
Next time you see Connie or any of those who volunteer to take over committees, be sure to say thank you. I will not name them because I am sure not to mention someone. Do not put it off just because Summer Celebration is over. Just do it!
SUMMER CELEBRATION 2016
There are already plans being made to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Summer Celebration. Research is being conducted and we need your help. If you remember anything about the celebrations before 1992, please give me a call at 622-3217. More information will be coming in the next few weeks.
RECYCLE DAY
The next Recycle Day will be August 1st. The 4th of July was not a good day to collect recycling. The Volunteers also deserved some time off. I admire those volunteers no end because that is one job I could not possibly do. I am saying over and over, “thank you a million times over.”
50+ HOME SCHOOLED
My father taught me irony. “Keep crying and I’ll give you something to cry about.”
